Or even SMS through cellular while wifi is on. It would be nice to not have to turn off wifi to send a text.

Umm. I don't have to turn Wi-Fi off to send a text or mms. Only Wi-Fi calling breaks this by clearing the SMS center number...

Do you have T-Mobile? Do you use WiFi calling?

I've never had to turn off WiFi to send SMS/MMS on any devices I owned, but I use AT&T, which doesn't have WiFi calling.

Obviously didn't think it was normal. Kinda thought 8.1 might fix it. And the question isn't about needing wifi to send SMS although that could help sometimes it's that I need to turn off wifi to send SMS, so if I am somewhere that doesn't have good 4g and need to be on wifi I have to keep swapping to send them. Yes I'm on tmobile with wifi calling gonna turn the feature off to see if that helps

I don't think anything is going to be different on T-Mobile Windows Phones after the 8.1 update. You'll still have to turn Wi-Fi off and turn on your data to send and receive MMS. SMS, however, should work fine when Wi-Fi is active.

I think it's a great question. I've been on AT&T with WP7 and WP8 and 8.1 and I always thought it was stupid that you can't send sms/mms through wifi. I didn't get cellular coverage in my house until I purchased a Microcell. In case people haven't noticed, AT&T doesn't have the best coverage. ;) Why would you not be able to use wifi for this anyway?

Hey Meagey

I have never heard this before on WPC. I'm stumped, so I can only chime in with everyone else and say this is definitely NOT normal. If nobody else here at WPC can help, you really need to visit a carrier store and show this to them. It's definitely unacceptable and they will sort that out for you. If you can, let us know what the problem was.

Mainly because SMS is a GSM based standard (tied to the protocol's used to exchange data with cell towers) which has nothing to do with any of the protocols used to exchange data over the internet. Technically at least, if it travels over the internet, it isn't an SMS. Apple's iMessage is probably the closest thing to what you are proposing. It's basically the same thing as WhatsApp, Viber, etc with an added SMS portal through which it channels messages to people who don't own iOS devices.

There was a previous post on the problem previously on WPCentral - http://forums.windowscentral.com/windows-phone-8/206127-cant-send-mms-messages-while-wifi.html
