windows 11 S mode av updates

Father has Windows 11 in S mode. When installing Security Intelligence update for Microsoft Defender gets "error encountered", which then changes to "completed". Update history states "successfully installed" on related entry. How can something be successfully installed if an error occurred during the install - that does not make sense. Am obviously nervous now that the av is not being updated properly. Any suggestions?
