Windows 8/RT: set Mail app as default over Outlook for desktop Office?

How can this be done? I was in class today and needed to email something to a classmate through word. I do not have Outlook set up on my Surface, so it could not be done. How can I set the mail app as default for Microsoft Office?

The Mail app is not actually a desktop email client like Outlook, so it cannot be set as default in desktop Office.

So in order to share documents through word via mail, I have to set up outlook?
