You have to take care of the tax for free gifts. Every time you have won something, you pay tax.

But how they pick it random? How can we be sure they're picking it random? Did they have their own policy for giveaways like this?

Not sure how they pick the winners but I once won a Tshirt and while shipping was covered, my country (Kenya) stamped on a 25% customs duty.

So for small items it may seem expensive but for tech devices I think it would be worth it to get the laptop/computer/gaming console etc for a quarter of the price.

Therefore, yes, always be aware when entering into contests whether you can afford to import the prize. It's unfortunate some countries have to place taxes but as there is no way they can tell if its a genuine gift/prize, they just have to tax everything. The only way you can avoid paying tax is if you applied for a tax exemption certificate from the importing country's custom's department.

Hope that helps! :)
