Wireless charging - is this normal?

It's possible that it takes longer but since I'm charging over night anyway it doesn't really matter ;)

I had this problem with a couple of third party chargers. I have swapped things round now so that I use my Nokia DT-900 charger pad (converted to a stand with the aid of a watch presentation box) bedside overnight and the third party charger stand in the living room where I can keep an eye on it and use it to top up the charge if planning to go out in an hour or so.

Re: Wireless charging - is that normal?

I am using the EC Ultra-Slim Wireless Charger pad, and I have no doubt it takes much longer to charge my 830 than when I plug it into the cable attached to an electric outlet.
I looked at my charging stats using "Battery" app. Charging on my Qi pad, I get 7% charge in *60* minutes. When plugged in to AC electrical outlet with supplied cord, I get 30% in 60 minutes. That Qi charging rate is terrible, not worth it to even use it, I'd just as soon plug the damn thing in.

I used Qi charging with my Lumia Icon. I used the Icon all day and then put it in the charging cradle at night. It just charged while I slept. It was fully charged in the morning. No fuss, no worries..... I never had to charge my Icon during the day except if I used the GPS navigation for longer trips. I kept a charger in the car for those occasions.

After some further experience of using the Nokia DT-900 as an overnight charger then it seems that all is not as it seems. It will show as 100% for most of the night then early morning it will suddenly dip about 5% which seems to correspond to Glance switching out of night mode but not start recharging. I have started the habit of picking the phone up when I first wake up to check any messages etc then put it back on the stand which triggers charging to start again while I go get the first coffee of the day, shower and dress by which time it has topped it back up to 100%.

I bought some cheap barebones qi charging modules, just the coil and pcb board, for about $5 each on eBay. So far they do a decent job, charging at a steady rate of 18% to 21% and then keeping it at 100% until I pick it up. O/c, I had to build a cradle, but anyone with basic skills can do something ok with wood. I found the positioning had to be pretty much spot on, or the charging rate drops fast... The modules I bought do the job, but I will go for better quality modules next time - these are finicky.

I use a PowerBot wireless charger that I bought on line. I keep one on my desk at work and another next to my bed at home. I notice that in the course of the day it cycles on and off - apparently it stops charging when the battery gets to 100%, then when the battery drops a little it starts again. My phone is always at 100% when I wake up in the morning ... so I wonder if different charges have different level of tolerance as to how low the battery gets before they start charging again?

I'm sure they do - I read reports of wireless chargers simply stopping when at 100%, and not starting until the next QI 'reconnection'.

Disregard the following rambling on, it was meant for another thread...

In any case, that's not the problem here:

  • Phone is at 100% when picked up from charger
  • Phone crashes/reboots within a 1/2 hour
  • After reboot, phone has lost about 50% of its charge instantly - shows averaged since last recharge, but I bet the battery level was fine before the crash/reboot.
  • Phone is cool to the touch - if it had burned 50% of the battery in 20 minutes it would be very hot.
  • Manual reboot did not restore the battery level
  • Removing the battery then booting did reset the battery level to what it really is, i.e.: 95% or more
  • Previous step not absolutely necessary as charging the phone later in the day had restored the correct battery level last time; however charging right after the reboot charges normally, but battery level is not reset.

Can't confirm if wireless charging is involved or not, but this never happened before I started wireless charging...
What worries me is if the phone reports the battery is at 50% when it's actually at 95%, and keeps on charging until it thinks it's at 100%, won't it push the battery to 95+50 = 145% charge, and set it on fire or badly damage it at best?

Fgaudet,

Could this also be battery related.
Like a "bad" contact or buggy "sensor" in the battery.
Or "dirty" battery contacts.

All possible, but it would be quite the coincidence this happened just as I started using a wireless charger. I never open the battery cover, I don't see how the contacts could suddenly be dirty...
I'll keep using the wireless charger for some time, see if it does it again.

I have two phones with QI, a L820 with QI-shell & a L830. (A L930 will arrive to my Lumia collection tomorrow :) )

I bought two NILLKIN Magic Disk II wireless charger + two Champion USB 2A chargers.

Unfortunately I can't post links yet... :(

I have only had them a few days, so my experience is not so long.

-The L820 will charge quite well to 100% then the charger stops charging. The phone are medium warm after a charge.

-The L830 gets very very warm. So I'm not so fond of using the Nillkin Magic Disk II for that phone. But that phone is also charged to 100% (most of the times, not always & I don't understand why) & then it stops charging.

So the phones are not always at 100% charge when removing them from charging. This since the chaging stops when 100%.

So I'm not 100% satisfied. I thought the QI was a general standard that was possible to trust.
