Would anyone buy a refreshed Surface Pro 4 When there is A Surface Laptop???

I quite like the inking capabilities of the Pro, but it's hard to pass up the premium hardware design of the laptop. I am definitely torn.

I have a Surface Pro 4 and a 3rd party OEM laptop. I find myself reaching to each for different reasons. Each form factor has a compelling convenience case for me.

I think so I have a Surface Pro 4 that I like a lot and use for media consumption but it lacks hardware decoding of hevc files which make the cpu do all the work and it heats up a lot and drains the battery faster. I also don't use it very much like a laptop.

I think they fill different needs. I like having a tablet, and that isn't an option with the Surface Laptop.

I have been struggling with this because as a designer, it's nice to be able to lay the pro down flat or at a low angle with the kickstand and I would be worried about breaking the hinge on the Surface laptop screen if I tried to really get in and draw with it. However....as much as I love the Pro its "lap-ability" is a little lacking to me. I also do a lot of writing (love the Pro keyboard for what it's worth), but it is really hard to beat the straight up "work on any surface" ability of a true laptop. And call me a fan boy but the design of the Surface Laptop is reallllllly drool worthy to me. My biggest request was a longer battery life than the SP3/4 and they BOTH deliver on that end so either one will make me a happy camper. Now just to decide which one...

the surface laptop can do more for its price IF you prefer to use it as a laptop. a $999 surface laptop and a $999 surface pro are quite different. the $999 surface pro excludes a keyboard, so its a very powerful tablet, whereas the $999 surface laptop is the complete package with what seems like the same cpu, ram, and storage. if a consumer can see themselves preferring to write notes or draw or do anything predominantly touch, it makes more sense to get the surface pro but for mostly any other type of computer use the laptop is better.

I'd rather Suface Laptop than Surface Pro 4 because I'm use to have a laptop

meriniserik, im with you on preferring the surface laptop. for the past 10+ years ive owned laptops and im used to them. i can see myself using touch once in a while but it wouldnt be my predominant input method and so why buy a surface pro + keyboard + mouse separately when i can get one device that has it all for the same price?

lawdnikon i totally understand the lapability thing. i always type on my lap and thinking about the edge of the kickstand on my legs was enough to turn me away from buying the surface pro products. when you use it on your lap, do you use it with the type cover? how is that? i can see one advantage to the surface pro over the surface laptop for lapability being heat dissipation because the type cover wouldnt give any heat as opposed to the surface laptop. everything in life has its compromises, but at least you seem like youd be happy with either surface product! :)

I mean Surface Pro 4 has its advantage of being a portable machine while Surface Laptop is a traditional Laptop, which most of the people prefer. So will surface laptop affect the Surface Pro lineup?

Speak for yourself, I bought a Surface Pro because I wanted a 2 in 1, if I didn't I would have bought a laptop. So no, I'm not interested in the Surface Laptop. Sure I'd use it if given to me, but I won't buy one when it's of inferior design for how I use my computer.

As someone who writes on the screen a lot taking notes from clients, i just cant see me using the pen with the laptop version at all. The screen doesnt fold down (or 360 would have fixed it). I guess folding it like other 2-in-1 would have been tricky considering all the other brands. Surface was originally intended to show off features and new ideas, the laptop just seems here to fill a hardware gap and position win10S. Including teh writing possibility was probably a way of keeping al the screens the same and making sure the win10 creator features dont seem lost. If they didnt include it people would be complaining, rightfully i guess.
So i guess it comes down to use-casing: want to write and scribble > 2in1 or surface pro (4), if you want a laptop you could get the surface laptop. Personally i think i WOULD have opted for the laptop if it could go 360, before teh surface pro arrived. Now its more logical for me to go for the new pro.. although its more expensive, the new hinge is probably taking car eof the only comment i would have left since surface 3 pro...

Going to have to dissagree that "most" people would prefer a laptop. I think in 2017 its quite the opposite.

1. 2-in-1 form factor
2. Pen tilt sensitivity
3. Nicer screen resolution
4. Kickstand

Basically it depends what do you need a device for - if it's for note taking or meant to be used primarily with a pen, then a Surface Pro (2017) is a no brainer. If you prefer standard laptop form factor and don't rely much on touch screen and pen, then I guess you should go with the Surface Laptop.

If your patient, you can scoop up some really good deals for used surface pro 4s so its up to how much you wanna spend and your preferred form factor.

why do u look for a divorcee when u have a teenage virgin with love 4 U in a portable and affordable form lol

If you want a tablet ad we'll and W10 Pro, get the new Surface Pro. If you want a laptop exclusively and W10S with the possibility of upgrade to Pro, get the Surface Laptop
