Would you buy a mobile with 7 day battery life with no camera and lower res display?

Great deal

Ive been chatting about tech with my techy mates for years. We always come back to the same topic... batteries are plain crap and hark back to the days of Blackberries that lasted a WEEK.

90% of the rubbish in a smartphone is never used by the people who buy it. It exists so marketing departments can try to sell us more crap we think we need but in reality never use.

I wonder how many people would buy a Lumia phone with 7 day battery life, without a Camera, a display that's perfect for messages with a basic OS that's efficient in the way it works.

If Blackberry could do it years ago and were the industry leaders what's the reason MS/Apple/Samsung cant?

No, I'd never consider such a thing.

Back then, smartphones were mainly used for phone calls, texting and work email.

Nowadays, I do most of what I do on a PC on my smartphone when I'm on the go. That means I am busy watching Netflix, listening to music/podcasts, browsing the web, checking the scores of sports games, taking pictures, posting on Twitter. The "phone" is the feature I use the least.

A smartphone that only does phone calls, text messaging and email isn't any better than a dumbphone.

In today's day and age, I can't imagine the need for such a prodigious battery. Unless you're going on a safari or an Everest climb I'm sure you'll always have access to a wall charger. Even feature phones had cameras so I'm not sure why you picked on that feature. You mention BlackBerry phones but even some of them had cameras with excellent macro capabilities (great scanning phones).

I can't agree with your proposition. Carry a spare battery if it's such a big deal. If you're willing to forego the camera you shouldn't have an issue with going for a WP device with replaceable batteries.

If I get a workday out of the battery I'm fine.

Like Laura I have and use a couple of mobile chargers.
They're no trouble to use and very handy.

I want my devices to have premium features over extreme battery time.

Interesting subject for a thread...

I Could Buy, but i cant replace my Lumia Phone.

If i'll went to the deep forest, climb a mountain, etc, ill consider my Lumia as my NAVIGATOR with the use of Photo Geotagging. and I'll consider your phone as my backup(with whole week Travel or so). I dont want to get lost in the middle of Nowhere Signal so that ill consider Maps of Lumia. hehehe, good question.

I understand the need for the latest and greatest, I get the latest devices myself, Like the 920 and 1020 the day it came out.....920 was utter ****e while it had its battery issues, a mobile communication device you cant use to communicate! 920 and 1020 and all future phones would be better with a removable battery...then I can watch Netflix, surf the net, have push email on all 8 email accounts, have everything on in background as well as bluetooth, WIFI, location services on with the warm feeling that I have an extra weight of a battery in my other pocket that i can swap after 6 hours :/

Tech companies have many people 'sold' on everything, they keep pushing which is great BUT battery life on a device that doesn't last a full day? that's damn ridiculous. I travel the world and find all the services mentioned above useful but the device becomes useless if theres no juice on the go. Its not just Lumia's (calm down fan boys) its all of them...dang im tempted to set up something on kickstarter that has at least 2 day battery! As for 'carrying' a portable battery/charger, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a small device.

Great, then your don't need 1080p display or 4k display (which is ridiculous to have on a small device anyway) - guess how much battery life you would get and still do what you want to do.

My point is smartphones try to cater to everyones needs by offering everything. there isn't a single person that uses ALL of the features. I guess its simple psychology and fear of losing out by not having the 'latest' and 'greatest'. Im thinking of going retro and back to a tiny phone and an 8 inch surface when it comes out as I don't get compromised on either.

That would be interesting considering I have my roots with those Palm PDAs. I still have a couple still, and dang, they would last 1-2 weeks! (even with worn batteries) If the apocalypse hits, you can bet I'll swap out or at least supplement my phone with one of my Palms.

I remember it feeling weird when I plugged in my iPod touch daily/every other day. (it was my first modern device)

Something like this would be nice to have as a backup device to use for long trips where you don't have access to a charger that often. (camping, backpacking across Europe, etc) I would buy one, but not for my daily driver. Definitely see it as a niche device, though.

Ever since I installed a wireless charging plate in my car, my phone rarely drops below 40%.

I have a charging plate on my desk at work and in my room next to my bed.

I also have three spare batteries, but never use them.

Honesty, if you really want a battery to last a week and you don't mind giving up some features, why not just use those old blackberries?

Great for you :) - a lot of people don't have that many chargers, anyway the point is to NOT have that many chargers to begin with. Blackberies don't run WP8

Many feature phones out there today are great for basic messaging and have great battery life.

you can always get an external battery for your pocket supercomputer. 22400 mAh battery that will last you 9 full phone charges is $50 on amazon.
given a heavy usage scenario with battery that needs to be recharge at the end of every work day (say sometime in the evening), and given that you'll still have some % left (you don't leave it to go to 0 now do you), you should be able to last around 10 days with such battery.

If you want that kind of phone, there is Nokia 6310i. But, I don't see the point. Maybe for backup phone for a long journey, but not for everyday use. Technology goes forward, and we are going with it. :)

You can buy the wireless plates for $5, there's no reason to not have many.
