blackscreen after latest update in windows 10

I did the automatic update at the end of March. My desktop monitor began going black after 2-3 seconds after the update. I thought the monitor had died because it was old, so I bought a new monitor. Same problem!

If I turn the monitor off and then on again with the machine running, I can see the screen. the computer is working. I just can't see anything for more than a couple seconds.

maybe the sleep settings are messed up? The time could be very short?
