Why does my email disappear from my Lumia 925 after a few days?

my email dissapears from my Lumia 925 after a few days? why

I have bought a new Nokia Lumia 925 and signed into my MS account. The phone has updated to Windows 8.1 and is confirming that it is fully updated.
The problem is that the email works fine for a few days and then suddenly all messages disappear. I check the deleted folder and that is empty. All that shows are sent messages?. I deleted my email account and restarted my phone and after re entering my Email account details it started accepting emails again. After 3 days and all emails disappear again. My windows 8.1 laptop is downloading the same email account fine and so is my Samsung Galaxy S2 which I was going to retire for the new Windows phone. Is this a common problem????

You need to change your sync settings if you want to view or download emails for more than 3 days.
