When will the lumia 1030 be release? Will it be in a couple months? Maybe at microsoft surface event? I wonder what specs it will have, hopefully it will be much thinner. I also hope that it will take photos much faster.

I don't think there has been much speculation of what will be the 1020's successor. While it may make sense that it would be called the 1030, I think Microsoft may have more in mind for it. This is all speculation, but I would expect word of the new device to come later this year / early next, and the actual release to be sometime next year into early the following year.

The release cycle for these high end devices has not been very frequent, and I'm not sure I would expect that to change.

History of the best cameras (from my view of when Nokia took the lead in camera):
n95 - March 2007
(n86 - June 2009 - not really super great at the time)
n8 - April 2010
808 - June 2012
1020 - July 2013

So they have been getting more recent, but with the MS acquisition, it's tough to even guess.

If it happens it won't launch until this Fall. The Lumia 930 is going to take the spotlight over the Summer and since it won't release in the US until June/July I wouldn't expect any other new phone until at least then. That being said I don't expect Nokia to instantly release the 1030 in August/September and really stick it to everyone who bought a L930 (Since the specs will likely be the same minus the better camera) so I expect it in October/November maybe positioned around the new iPhone launch.

Of all the current Lumia's, the 1020's successor is probably the biggest unknown. I wouldn't hold my breath on it until we start getting real rumors and leaks.

The 930 has been out in the U.S. for months as the Lumia Icon. The 930 is the international version of the Icon. We will most likely see a new high or mid range Lumia in the summer.

If Nokia (Microsoft) is smart, they will launch a 1030 sooner rather than later with a snapdragon 800 at least and a 1080p screen. I know for myself, my Lumia 900 contract was up and I bought a used 920 since there's no way I'm using an upgrade to buy something as outdated as the 1020, even if the camera is great. I can't get the 930/Icon on AT&T.

Actually, Dre, if Nokia/Microsoft are smart they'll wait until they're ready to release brand new imaging technology to capture the amazement of the masses. That way they get free advertising from the talk about the device and questions about the unique-looking device in stores.

Hopefully they've finally started perfecting the Pelican Imaging light-field camera or started work on some kind of computational imaging sensor. If they can genuinely make a smartphone camera that can keep up with cheaper DSLR's, they'll be the talk in all circles similar to what the 1020 became.

Fingers crossed they aim for a summer/early autumn release. I think they need to start the controlled leaks to build hype soon, lest people buy some of the other flagships. The 1020 leaks started 5 months prior to its release, and certainly built a lot of hype up to the release in July.

Hope it arrives soon. 1020 lacking hardware to proper support the camera is such a deal breaker even if the picture quality is superb.

So far all in the know like Daniel have been quite clear on that there is no 1030 in the sigts for this year. It is sadly enougt more probable that the next premium camera phone is the next iPhone. Evry model they have launched have improved on the camera and by now the iPhone 5s is only slightly inferior to the 1020. My guess is that Microsoft/Nokia will drop this vall too.

So far all in the know like Daniel have been quite clear on that there is no 1030 in the sigts for this year.

Daniel Rubino clearly stated the dual-lens smartphone from Nokia could arrive as soon as Q4 2014.
"I’ve also heard rumblings of a dual-lens phone from Nokia later this year, where two cameras would be used perhaps for a multi-focus, Lytro type effect."
Windows Phone 8.1 to get at least two OS updates in 2014 | Windows Phone Central

And even so, there's no guarantees that this rumour is accurate or that the dual-lens smartphone he's heard about is the "1030" we're waiting for. I'm fairly confident we'll see a "1030" sooner rather than later. It's well known Microsoft loved the pioneering, new customers and publicity the 1020 gave them with Nokia's impressive technology. They'll want to keep the pace up.

I don't even know where to start with this statement...

In blind camera comparisons the iPhone 5S scores low, even compared to the measly HTC One M8 4MP sensor. The camera in the iPhone 5S is decent, but it's nowhere near great, and it's lightyears behind the 1020.

Lumia 1020 beats the iPhone 5s and Galaxy S4 by a mile in our blind camera comparison

Have a look at other more in-depth comparisons too and you'll start to see just how far behind the others the iPhone 5S is.

Obviously I stepped on a sore toe. Maybe it is that my text was over interpreted due I'm not an native English writer. Let's try to clearify.

This does not mean that an 1030 is in the woods. I'm not sure what it is with the refocus technique that get some people going, personal I feel it mostly gimmicky. Fun but gimmicky. While Nokia 1020 have the refocus app it is not it that makes 1020 the greatest camera phone.

I hope you are right. I haven't seen that many signs of quick movement but I guess I'm a pessimistic soul.

Cuting a lot of stuff.
I never said that Nokia 1020 was anything else than the greates camera phone produced... yet.
So what I'm saying is:
1) Nokia 1020 is the best camera phone so far, it is getting close to a year old and in electronics that is ancient.
2) Apple has gone from having crap cameras to decent to very good. While most comparison (I think all I have read done by photographers) ranks the 1020 highest at lest a couple (all of the two I have seen have been judged by amateurs) have given the price to the latest iPhone. This does not indicated that the 1020 has lost its throne but it indicates that the iPhone now is an competitor and not that far behind.
3) One of Nokia's lead designers on the pure view cameras has left Nokia and moved to Apple. A clear indication on that Apple continue have improvement of there camera as an priority.
http://www.imore.com/apples-nokia-hire-shows-it-take-iphone-photography-seriously

All this summons up to that if not Microsoft/Nokia get the 1030 out before early Q4 there is a quite substantial risk/chance (depends on your view, my is risk being an WP fan) that Nokia Lumia 1020 will lose its throne and the winner may very well be the coming iPhone and Apple is not alone trying to improve its camera.

I'm rooting for WP but I can see that it will be a tough match and both Microsoft and Nokia's track record to deliver speedily is not the best when it comes to phones.

Nextleaks on twitter had twitted this some days ago,

Lumia 1820 = 1030: 5.2'' QHD /QSD805/3GB RAM/3400mAh/Lytrocamera and Visio pureview cam

now, i dont know how true this leaker is, but Lytro Style camera is in the works from Nokia from some previous leaks,
also, read that " The Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 allows phones to offer two-camera systems like the Duo Camera on the HTC One (M8). According to the chipmaker's senior director for cameras and imaging, Tim Yates, Qualcomm plans on developing a reference design that supports both stereo and depth cameras, so that phone manufacturers won't have to do it themselves from scratch."

So this twit mite be true coming from NextLeaks. Not sure though.

Also, the samsung zoom k coming, HTC M8, and iPhone getting a Nokian to work on their cams, i see 1030 happening this year, but it would take time.
Also Nokia are known to bring something new to their camera offering so they mite be working on it.

Also, Apple signing a Nokian to work on their camera's, i dont know how it would affect MS / Nokia?
Its not a single guy who builds a camera or the phone, its the team , the company who works together in making it possible, many different factors are involved.

I apologize myself if I came off as harsh, but claiming the iPhone 5S was anywhere near the imaging quality of the 1020 or the new 2014 flagships struck me as blatantly untrue.

This does not mean that an 1030 is in the woods. I'm not sure what it is with the refocus technique that get some people going, personal I feel it mostly gimmicky. Fun but gimmicky. While Nokia 1020 have the refocus app it is not it that makes 1020 the greatest camera phone.

Actually, evleaks noted that a new imaging flagship was in the works back in November 2013. Combine that with the dual-lens rumours and the need for a 1020 refresh and you've got some slight hints on what's coming!

https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/401101953200963585

As for the "refocus", it's not so much the adjustable bokeh-effect that has people excited but rather the computational improvements, the loss of autofocus and waiting for autofocus to finish before taking a shot, no more out-of-focus images as well as 3D-mapping, improved low-light performance, reduced noise and thinner smartphones (no more camera hump!). Computational photography is truly the future!

Well, if you take the entirety of the smartphone into consideration then the 1020 never had the throne to begin with. The internals were old already at the time of release. The camera, however, was and still is unmatched (albeit it seems to have colour accuracy issues during video recording).

As for the iPhone 5S camera quality, the 5S loses constantly in blind camera comparisons over at PhoneArena:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Blin...r-the-smartphone-camera-you-like-best_id54444
Samsung Galaxy S5 wins our blind camera comparison, followed by the Xperia Z1 and... Oppo Find 7a

As for the more professional camera reviewers:
Smartphones versus DSLRs versus film: Smartphones versus DSLRs versus film: A look at how far we've come: Connect

Compared to the competition, the iPhone isn't more than decent. It's an OK camera for a smartphone.

As for the PureView specialist leaving Nokia, that could be anything from Nokia putting their focus on technology other than PureView, uncertainty in the job considering the Microsoft take-over or simply that he got a better offer. All smartphone makers need to put a heavy focus on the camera, lest they trail behind and lose all business.

All that being said and done, I'm not too optimistic either about a sped-up release shedule from Nokia/Microsoft either. But we can always hope, right? Let's see what Q3-4 has in store for us!

I think we will not see the real 1020 successor before first half of 2015. Why? Here my theory:

a cool improvement to the actual sensor could be use a 55mpx camera, but this requires a different CPU: the snapdragon 808/810. Those cpus will be relased in second half of 2014 but is expected to see them in commercial device only in first 2015 half.

I admit it: i really hope this is how things should go, i never bought lumia 1020 because its obsolete CPU but with a freshly new 810 this could be really nice!

I think it will come along next year. Microsoft's 2014 Flagship is due Q4 2014 the McLaren so expect 1030 a good three months after that. It also depends on how Microsoft goes about with it. I'm sure Nokia engineers were already hard at work trying to reduce the size of the camera unit to more respectable and sleek levels before the Microsoft deal so I hope they successfully do that.
We can expect leaks and test units much before that though.
So Q1-Q2 2015 we can expect it

The Snapdragon 805 has the 55 MP dual ISP capabilities as well, and that's already available.

With that being said, I seriously doubt the Lumia 1020 successor would simply be about more and more megapixels, nor are the former Nokia division limited by what the SoC is capable of (as seen in the 808 and 1020). More megapixels doesn't make a better photography, and the former Nokia imaging division knows it.

What is more likely is the leak by Daniel Rubino about a dual-lens smartphone implementing computational photography, now that the faster processors allow for it.

Well, according to The Verge sources, the McLaren is the 1020 successor.

"Evleaks first unveiled the existence of Nokia McLaren, and we understand the device will largely be seen as a Lumia 1020 successor with a similar hump in the rear casing for a powerful camera."

Microsoft bets on Kinect-like gestures for the future of Windows Phone | The Verge

Given that this is supposedly a device aimed at pulling people into the Windows Phone ecosystem, I'm not surprised Microsoft chose to combine the best of all the past and upcoming Lumia flagships into one extraordinary device. Whether that massive hump is a refined 1020 sensor or the planned dual-lens setup remains to be seen.

I think with the canon patent cross licensing they might have figured out a way to get rid of the two lenses. Canon developed its own liquid lens tech. That would allow you to do the lytro stuff (and more like optical zoom) without having two lenses . You could have a lumia 1020 with the same 41megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and 5x digital on top, and have all the upgraded parts like 3gig ram.

I hadn't yet heard of the Canon-Microsoft patent cross-licensing agreement, so that's exciting news! I can't seem to find any information on how the liquid lens technology could be used for optical zooming and plenoptic cameras though. Do you by any chance have a source on that bit? I'm intrigued!

its really interesting, i hope it can be done for small sensors like the ones in our smartphones!
