Sony is considering launching a Windows Phone sometime next year, according to a new report from The Information. If true, such a move would break Sony's current loyalty to Android and give Nokia some fresh competition in the Windows Phone segment. Both sides have reportedly held numerous discussions, with Sony going so far as to draw up designs for a prototype device. Any future product could be branded under Sony's Vaio line, according to The Information.
Microsoft's takeover of Nokia's devices unit seemingly hasn't given Sony any second thoughts; talks have continued even after the acquisition was first announced. But the report notes that a deal hasn't yet been finalized and plans could come undone if Microsoft and Sony disagree over licensing fees, preloaded software, and other topics. A mobile alliance wouldn't be altogether new for the pair, and older prototypes reveal that Sony has previously considered embracing Windows Phone.
Nokia's Lumia smartphones hold a commanding lead over Windows Phone hardware from Microsoft's other partners. But that's partially due to a lack of genuine competition; Samsung and HTC both remain focused on developing smartphones running Android, the world's most popular mobile operating system. For Windows Phone to succeed, Microsoft must find other vendors willing to give the platform a significant push. It's also reportedly held discussions with ZTE to produce additional low-end Windows Phone devices in the US, China, and Europe.

That's great news.......if you live in Asia or maybe Europe. American carriers haven't been offering very many Sony's lately. I'm not sure why but I hope that changes.

Interesting. I won't lie, Sony makes some good mobile devices. It would be fresh to see a Sony WP device.

I would love a Sony WP device, as would BIGPADDY, but I don't see it happening. Maybe dual booting WP on their android devices though.
Dual boot is like having two girlfriends at the same time. You must have to ignore one while using the other......... Not a good idea and might be good for a tech enthusiast but not for a common end user..........

This would be huge because it would finally allow WP8 to launch in Japan. Currently WP has all but died there because they were stuck in WP7 because of the Japanese government's restrictive import policies.

I really do think Microsoft is doing this just so they can break into Japan's market. The only problem is they'll have to add a LOT of features that WP doesn't have to survive in Japan. Their phones have some really great capacities.

So, I'm actually considering this as my next Windows Phone. My contract just ended, so now I'm just waiting until April's Build conference, and we'll see what happens I guess. With rumor being that Samsung's WP is Verizon only, then this Sony as my next seems very possible.

I'm most interested in the screen and camera. But, I guess whatever T-Mobile shoves out will be my next.

Sorry but it is against the forum rules to copy an article from another news source and paste it into a post here. The writer that wrote the story on the Verge deserves the clicks. You should have to go there to read the entire article. This thread has to be closed.

I think you need to put the forum rules as a sticky to be more specific to new people.
