830 or m8

Please don't speak for most users.....It's camera is the reason why the M8 is not a phone that MOST windows phone users are upgrading to. When someone would rather stick to a 2 year old 920/925 and not upgrade to an M8 that should tell you something.

Most users are wanting a valid 920 successor(still don't get the grief about the 930/icon but to each their own) or 1020/1520 successors.....So no the M8 camera is not quite good for most users. Let's just not....Furthermore it takes pictures Quickly is its only saving grace. It takes pictures faster yet at a far lower quality than my Lumia 1520 and the Lumia 830.

As you said, the Lumia 830 is fast because Windows Phone OS is amazing for devices that unless they TRULY need a super high end device(which it sounds like they don't), the Lumia 830 is a better device for them and a better device overall(Take out the processor difference....the M8 is not that much better than an 830).
I suggest that you get the M8. Windows Phone is optimized well enough that the Lumia 830 is fast, but the M8 is noticeably faster.

I also think that that the M8 camera is quite good for most users because it takes pictures quickly and has a good auto-focus mode. In fact, I take more far more "keeper" pictures with my M8 than I ever did with my Lumia Icon. Of course, I'm mostly taking pictures of my cat, and the M8 has a great camera for capturing motion.

If it were up to me, I'd get the 830. Longtime Nokia fan here and not ashamed to admit it. HTC is nice, though (I've got an unlocked One M7 as one of my backup phones).

I wrote, "I also think that that the M8 camera is quite good for most users." This is a statement of opinion that does not pretend to speak for other users.

Now that's how you pretend to speak for other users. Good work.
Except I am speaking based on the exact things the users of this very site have said and the fact most avoid the m8 and usually deride it for its camera.

Statistics and data gathering is my wheel house, so don't get me started with comments based on completely subjective material :P

All kidding aside, the one thing that is causing me to lean more towards the M8 over the 830 for my next phone is exactly what most people don't like about it. The camera. I'm not artistic, I don't need to get the perfect shot with superb quality. When I see a squirrel humping a dachshund in the park, or some other absurd but quickly passing moment in time I want to be able to snap a quick shot of it as fast as possible with good results so I can share it with my equally simple minded friends. That was the only drawback for me with the Icon. The camera just took too long to load and focus. The pictures I took with it were beautiful when I spent the time to do it right, but the downside was a lot of blurry squirrels lol. I may be in the minority here on this forum, but an exceptional camera over an average or slightly below average camera isn't a deal breaker for me.

For what it's worth, I find the m8 camera to be serviceable. Much better than the 820 (my previous phone), any better than any previous camera phone I've owned (I've never owned a good camera phone).

The "refocus" isn't as good as a software refocus solution, but on the other hand you don't need to have taken the picture in a special app to refocus, and it's full resolution (whereas software refocus was at a low res last time I checked). And software refocus is slow.

@Superboy, most users here have never actually used the phones they rip on, or otherwise dismiss potential candidates with bias rather than informed opinion. Bringing this up as support for an argument isn't the best... And is heresy anyway :P

Let's face it - most people use the cameras on their phones to post pictures on Facebook, plus the occasional picture that will be only presented on the phone's tiny display, never anything larger than that. Every camera is good enough for that

Regarding HTC updates: HTC is the absolute master of announcing updates, then silently remove them from any roadmap they might have appeared on. Happened to me twice with Android phones, and I highly doubt they're even interested in providing their users with updates when instead they could be selling you new phones. Quite frankly, most people (the non-tech-savvy ones, aka the large 95% majority of all smartphone users) don't give a f*** about updates and don't even know they're either available or necessary.

My 1520 screen cracked twice. So i figure the size is too much for me. I have an m8 right now and find I'm missing the Lumia software exclusives and touches. Defiantly miss having a better camera and dedicated camera button. This m8 is slippery as hell. Gonna try a 830 when I gets here next week (found a used one on eBay). If your used to all of the Lumia goodies I'd be willing to bet you'll be happier with the 830. I think denim is about to hit in a few days also. I think the thing I miss most is glance and wireless charging.

ive spent a week with the 830 and a week with the m8. for me i like the 830 better. wireless charging and glance are the two things i loved about my 1520. i am glad to have them back in the 830. the 830 is quite a bit lighter but still feels very sturdy and well put together, not at all cheap feeling. the screen is a bit better looking on the m8, blacks are blacker and colors are crisper, but when the phones are not side by side it doesn't matter, both are great screens.
i listen to alot of music. hands down the music on the m8 is way better than the 830, with that being said, i listen to most of my music through Bluetooth speakers.
while the 830 has the denim update, you cant take advantage of the "hey cortona" feature with the 830 because the processor is not supported. when the m8 gets denim this feature will work.

side by side opening apps, there is not much of a speed difference between the two phones. most apps open at the same time, a few are a teeny bit faster on the m8. some actually open quicker on the 830. weird huh.

battery life seems better on the 830, but that may also be a perception based on how easy it is to wirelesly charge my 830 compared to the m8

all in all, while the 830 is not a "hero" phone like the m8, its got more of the good kung fu that i like about the windows phones.

I only went with the 830 because the M8 doesn't have wireless charging. I can't go back to not having wireless charging! That's crazy. This should be standard on all flagship phones by now!

I was never a fan of the M8, either the Android version or the Windows one. It's too tall for the screen size, and it has unforgivably large bezels. The 830 on the other hand, is one of the coolest looking and best built phones I've ever owned. It does get laggy here and there, but overall performance is acceptable for the price. I'm not a spec *****, I look at the whole package when shopping for a new phone, and although I wish the 830 was more powerful and had more RAM, I am super happy with my decision to buy it over the M8.
