830 won't connect to Windows Phone app for Mac

Can anyone help with this: My Lumia 830 won't connect with Windows Phone app for Mac for syncing. The app tries to connect but eventually reverts to "connect a phone". Strangely, if I pull out the USB cable slowly, a connection screen showing the 830 appears briefly.
The phone connects to Windows Phone for Windows app OK although it takes ages to get recognised.
I'm using the cable that came with the phone...as well as other USB cables I've got. I've rebooted everything many times and reinstalled the Windows Phone for Mac app.

What version of Mac OS X are you running?

Thanks Laura, but a phone restore seems to have sorted it. Tried restore before with no luck, but second one made it work.
