The last update seemed to have made a pretty big difference in battery life. Over night my battery only drained 5%. This is with Hey Cortana, Glance on and a few apps running in the background. The only high end feature I'm not using is Windows Hello cause it is still flakey

I took it off the charger at 8 am after letting it charge back to 100% and as of 9:47am the battery is at 99%. I'll see how it does tonight off the charger

But seems if you have battery drain issues when idling you want to join the insider fast builds

I would just add my 950 to the same list. My battery hasn't been a real problem lasting the whole day all but once since I got it. But with that being said I usually knock off a few percentage points right away once I take it off the charger in the morning. The morning after the update it's been two hours since coming off the charger and we're still sitting at 99% after a couple phone calls. Hmmm..

keep hearing about the insider builds, how do you get involved?

Go to the MS Store. Do a search for Insider. You'll get two hits. One's a pretty nifty program called "Insider" that shows you the status of about everything on your phone. The other is the "Windows Insider" program you're asking about. I actually really like the small do everything APP also. Get both. The "Windows Insider" app will ask you lots of permission agreements warning you it might destroy your phone. I wouldn't lose much sleep over that. MS has a program for your home computer called "Windows Device Recovery Tool" to put it back to original if you decide to.

I've only seen a few people ever complain they got their phones messed up on here and eventually they figured out how to undo it. In my experience, my HTC One for Windows and this new 950 both have run better after each update.

I wish this would show for my 950. I enrolled in the program last night and nothing. Not even the initial configuration update.
I'm guessing you didn't hit the quick version of the updates allowing you to get the latest builds before there are any solutions to anything bad you might encounter. Re open the app and press "Get Insider Builds". Then select the fast option for the very latest builds instead of waiting for them to be tried out for awhile before you get a new build.

just went for the app, didn't see this thread and went for slow release, said that the phone may reboot several times, it has done, and when I look it now has new OS I think it might be playing tricks on me now as its considerably cooler to touch. should I go back to the app and go for the faster updates?

I have actually tried both fast and slow and switched between them, It sat over night on the fast ring and still nothing.

Same here. Not getting any updates either.
I think there is a bug in the Insider app as it does not save which ring was selected.
Unlocked 950.
Check the 'About' info (touch ... in bottom right) and see if you're registered. Insider shows me registered for Fast Ring even though I have the same experience as you.

I've got an AT&T 950 and I'm enrolled in the fast ring. Got my update early yesterday morning. I really haven't noticed anything different. Edge might be a tad faster but I haven't really put it through it's paces yet. I'm still trying to get Outlook to sync ANY emails. Battery life has always been outstanding in standby for me. I don't really use my phone a lot throughout the day so I can make it last a couple of days (same with my last phone, the M8).

Looked in System -> About -> and there is nothing about Fast Ring or Insider :(

EDIT:
I looked in Windows Insider App instead (duh!) and under About it says "Insider Fast".

My battery life was terrible with the initial release. I disabled pretty much everything and battery life was still terrible. The update has apparently fixed the trouble, and the phone runs much cooler as well, which isn't much of a surprise.

Settings > update and security > update phone

It will take a WHILE but it will update. I left mine overnight and just restarted.

Battery life still isn't great on mine. At least it wasn't with Glance enabled at 30 seconds.

Took it off charge at around 7:30am, it's now 13:16 and it is at 50%. Turned Glance off at around 12:45 at 51% and have used the phone since and it's only dropped by 1%.

Edit - Usning 950XL

There is no need for windows insider app. The update is available like a regular one. However, for some of the 950 the phone doesn't detect the update.
I was one of those only solved with a reset😒
MS knows about this problem and is investigating.

950xl here and I agree. Same as yours. 5% drain over night. Now we just need SP4 to get the same or better connected standby.

Everything on but location and nfc. Off charge for 13 hrs using it 2 hrs. streaming Audiocloud through bluetooth. 2 hours browsing Edge, FB, Twitter, Nextgen, email = 63% left.
