Wondering if a maybe a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse might be better than a type 2 keyboard. I was going to use a mouse anyways. My only requirement is that the keyboard be back lit. Any recommendations?

I considered that. But in the end I came to terms with shelling out the money for a TypeCover2.

Benefits of the TypeCover2:
  • It is the thinnest keyboard with actual keys
  • It protects the Surface screen
  • Although the touchpad is terrible, it is usable in a pinch
  • It is attached to the Surface (having a separate keyboard, mouse, and Surface makes simply picking-it-up-and-go impossible without a tote)

I do carry a bluetooth mouse for those times when I have the space to use a mouse.

I use the Targus CityGear netbook case to transport the Surface, cables, mouse, and connectors along with notepad, pencil, etc. But once I'm at my destination I simply tote the Surface w/TypeCover2.

I have my desktop keyboard, a very compact, Bluetooth, and backlit Logitech k810, set up to work with the RT, but I rarely use it. I agree with JeepMan, that the typecover2 covers all the bases. The typecover is one of the three main reasons I own a Surface. When I need a mouse, I use a tiny USB one I keep in my backpack that I've had since my Vaio P days.
