I just bought a used 520 to travel overseas with since it was unlocked and cheap, with a good camera.

I do not trust people these days, so what can I do to make sure my phone is fully safe when I start using it? Will a restore factory defaults completely secure it from the previous person ... if he was trying to be sneaky with malware or something like that?

This is my first WF so what are some good apps to have on this OS? I have had lookout on my android for security, but does WF need anything extra?

Any fun apps I should pick up as well?

Thanks!

If you have set the phone up with your own Microsoft Account, then the phone is now secure.

If you had to set up your own account when you first turned on the phone, then a hard reset has already been done. Don't forget that the seller would want to protect their own data from you (or whoever else bought the phone).

As Aperture said if you sign into your Microsoft account when you first turn on the phone your all good if not just do a hard reset and it will request you to login with your Microsoft account after it reboots.

You dont need to install any apps for security on WP. As for good Apps to download that depends on what kind of apps you use.

Hope you enjoy using your windows phone :)

OK, so once I have set the phone up with my account when I first turn it on .. I am 100% good to go? True, I know the seller wants to save his stuff too, but I was thinking more along the lines of a clean wipe from him and then a background app running that he would of put on there. Yes, I know crazy thoughts, but my mind thinks like this in todays world, sadly.

OK, so something like Lookout, which I used on my android, is not needed on this phone?

For apps, I always enjoy a game or 2 that pass the time when I am traveling ... I will have the normal stuff like FB and the social network stuff. I know Chrome and other google products will not be on the windows phone, but is there a good Gmail app for the WF? Will I need a process killing app so I can keep my battery going for long periods? I have not researched yet, but is there a place on the phone that will track my data usage, so I can make sure I do not go over my paid time while overseas? My S3 had its own section on the phone that tracked all of this for me, which was great!

If when you turned on your phone, it went through a setup wizard and asked for your Microsoft Account, then the phone has been factory reset. There's no need for you to worry about any spy or tracking apps.

You won't need anything special to kill processes, the phone gives you a tool to choose which apps can run periodically in the background.

You should have the Data Sense app that will show you data usage. Your service provider might well have an app or mobile web site that will allow you to see your data usage as they see it.

oh ok thanks, gotcha!

ok nice I like that tool. I will just need to find it haha.

alright Data Sense app should work ... most the time when I buy my SIM cards overseas I do not get a login or anything to see data usage, so I need help tracking it.

If you're running Windows Phone 8.0, then you should go to the settings and swipe across to the "applications page". From there, you will be able to configure the background tasks. What you're basically doing is choosing which apps are allowed to sync data or run tasks in the background. I usually blocked apps from using background tasks unless they were pinned to my start screen and had live tiles.

You can just add Gmail as an account to the windows phone built in email app in settings > email+accounts it wil sync things like email, calendar etc to there respective built in WP apps.

As for game a racing game i like is asphelt 8 which is free , or there's Jetpack Joyride... there are quite a few games in the store that are quite good.

making sure you have battery saver switched on in settings is a good idea if your worried about battery, it switches of various tasks like updating live tiles and syncing email etc can give a good few hours extra sometimes.

OK, perfect! That will help a lot ..

How is the email app that is provided? Does it have a good ability to show Gmail properly .. with the tab sections and that stuff? I know some apps struggle with that.

I will have to check out that racing game!

When switching the battery saver on in settings will it turn off all live tile updates ... mainly email is what I am curious about, or can I set it to only turn on what I want?

To be honest I don't use Gmail so not to sure how well it works, I find the app ok for general use its nothing special. I think there are some 3rd part apps for Gmail as well but again you might have to try a few to find one you like.

Battery saver will disable all automatic updates you can still manually run a sync for emails if you open the app. Things like SMS and calls will still update.

windows phone are a secured OS than other, you dont need to install any antivirus app, for more secure, set "locate my phone" everything to "on" on setting, and set lockscreen need to enter pin. you can control your phone over windowsphone.com like ring your phone (60 seconds), delete all data on your phone, locate your phone and lock your phone etc

no app has virus, app can only have access to picture, SD card (file that are only visible when you connected to your computer), calender event etc, get your GPS (you can know which app using GPS by looking at the top of the screen, it will show a full circle inside a O when some app using GPS)

app can only read but not write thing from your phone
