Considered the 640.

Exactly the same situation here. Hate giving up the 1520 given that the microphone issue is not constant, however, after discovering that insurance replacement was an HTC One M8 instead of another 1520, I purchased a 640. Overall, I'm pleased with it. The screen and camera are indeed the noticeable differences, but not near the issues I thought they might be. At the end of the day, it likely just needs to get me through til a new Microsoft phone release.

Bonus: No more unintentional double taps...

I agree, get the 640XL. Had the 1520. Awesome phone. Stolen. MS did not have any replacement 1520s. Unbelievable. So opted for 640XL. Resolution not as good and only 8 Gig internal storage and 1 Gig Ram. On positive, v good price, similar large screen size, much lighter and more rounded corners so easier on pockets, surprisingly quick and fluid, so only 1 gig not an issue. 8 gig ram storage - I put as much as possible onto external 32 Gig micro SD so not big issue. Happy to recommend the 640xl.

I have both and interchange those and a 435 depending on what I am doing on a particular day. I found that except for the camera the 640 actually became my usual phone because the step down in performance is not all that noticeable other than the camera. I would say the 640 is worth getting as a backup while they are still available regardless.

I would advise getting a 640 for $50 and at some point fixing your 1520. There are a few of us here on these boards and in the US that could help you out and get it fixed for $50 or less.

Hi there folks - Sorry for the delayed response Valentines Day weekend Haven't been able to do much replying. Anyways as mentioned the reason Im not doing the 640 XL is solely due to the price. I know its much better to go with the XL line ups but if Im going to shell out a few 100 I may as well jump to the 950. Im not eager to jump platforms but Ill be honest Microsoft left a very sour taste in my mouth with the little microphone "feature" That being said Ive yet to be able to find out if Azurion (Insurance Company) is shelling out 950 XL's instead of 1520s or not. Like I said Im kind of in a cross hair because I can spend $100.00 And kick the insurance claim in and get the 1520 back (Or the replacement) or spend $128 and get an Iphone, or spend $50.00 and buy a 640 and deal with some of the things you guys talked about... Yeah Lots to think about :(

Be sure and let us know what happens. Do your best to find out what the Insurance Company will do for a replacement. If they decide to replace with a 950XL, then it might be worth the $100 there. If not, $50 is a good deal on the 640, and you'll not have to worry about contracts.

I'm going to throw something else out there for you to consider. You didn't say who your provider is, but considering this is a 1520, you are most likely on AT&T. That means that while you can buy out the rest of your contract, AT&T is no longer offering contracts and you may not be able to get a new contract, period. Contracts are quickly becoming a thing of the past, as T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T have largely discontinued new contracts. AT&T has replaced it with the Next program.

That means the price of your next phone will be as big of an issue as the price you're willing to shell out. Once you're contract is up, you can actually lower your monthly bill by getting a more affordable phone, or by "bringing your own phone." To bring your own phone, you just buy one outright, like a GoPhone (Lumia 640) and put your SIM card in it.

Let us know what you decide.

Agreed I am on att. I am on the next program currently hence why they gave me the option of buying it out for 128. Or I can pay the 100 and get a new whatever they send me. Am I wrong for resenting Microsoft for this 1520 incident and the microphone..

For a long time, the 1520 was the only Flagship device. You should always have higher expectations when you pay for a flagship. Microphone issues have been reported a lot on the 1520, so are you wrong for resenting it? I would. Why would I judge you for it? I do love my 640, but there are many times I wish I had a triple LED flash and 20MP PureView camera, but I'm a photography buff. Perhaps one day I'll jump to one with higher camera specs, but for now, since I just bought 2 for $29.88 each, I am VERY happy with the 640 performance vs. the price I paid. And, no, I won't sell one of them. My wife will likely steal it sooner or later. ;)

Ive also seen the 650 is being released in Europe as well which I assume the 650 XL isn't far behind it. I heard he 650 price point is just shy of $200 (USD of course). So of coure the 640 and 640 XL would drop in price substantially.

Cant really go for 400+ out of pocket right now.. This is my options.. Either 1. Pay $100.00 Get the 1520 fixed or replaced depending upon what Azurion will send, or Option 2. Buy the 640 for $50.00 and run with it until my contracts up. Or Pay $128 buy the phone I have and get an iPhone :) The only reason I haven't gone iphone yet is because of Cortana.. She saves me in the car.
No worries, Cortana works better on other phones anyway. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cortana/id1054501703?mt=8&at=10l3Vy

I don't think an XL is coming.

I think the only thing it won't do is read Text message out loud which is HUGE for me while driving..

If you have a Bluetooth headset connected to your device Cortana will read out your text messages and allow you to reply to them hands free.

Right but I thought that was a Windows Phone thing. I know Cortana will read them out loud thats whats keeping.

On another Note.. I was reading the Specs on an Iphone 6 Plus (Don't throw Gauntlets Yet) and I ready it has a 5.5 Inch Screen, and the 640 has a 5 Inch screen. Is that corner to corner or is that view only? I thought the Iphone's screen was bigger than 5.5 I thought it was a 5.7 or something.

On a second side note, I contacted Asurion last night on my way home.. Yeah thats a train wreck talking to those people. Im better off buying the 50.00 phone or waiting and getting anoher one. You have no idea what your getting, you can barely get through to them. They put me on hold indefinately... Yep definately done with them.

The screen size is measured corner-to-corner of the "viewable area" of the screen.

The iPhone you mentioned is indeed 5.5" display size. The Lumia 640XL is 5.7", and the Lumia 640 is 5".

So is the .5 Really noticeable? Of course compared to my 1520 which has almost an inch difference its noticeable. Sorry can you tell Im trying to make logistical sense out of doing a 640 LOL.. I find Im getting cheap at my 37 year old age :)

I've heard some people complain about going from a 6" to 5.7", and others who don't notice when they do. You will notice going from a 6" to a 5.5", and most definitely notice going to a 5". To me, the 5" is a sweet spot, as I'm able to handle it well with one hand and still have a large enough display to help with my over 50+ year old eyes. I can afford a 950XL, but I've gotten cheaper as I've gotten older as well. That's why I bought 2 Lumia 640s for $29.88 when Walmart had that sale. I already had a 640, but I like the phone, and I figure that will hold me over through breakage for a nice long time to come, because I'm not one that has to have the latest/greatest phone all the time. I'd use it if it were a gift, but I'm not going to spend my own money, because I'm just that stingy.

Same here. Was finding the 520 too small for the aging eyes. Problems with formatting in WP8.1 didn't help either.

The 640 is perfect on WP, all those issues are gone. It was also too much of a bargain for me. Considering a second. I'd like the better camera of the XL though. They are still pricey though.
