Cracked glass

Well it happened to me a couple of nights ago. Phone it the floor on it's side edge and shattered the screen in many places.

Seems like the normal places I would expect to have the screen don't. Is Ebay the only choice? Any experience or advice from someone that has been through this would be appreciated. I'm ok taking the phone apart, but I don't want to spend $100 for a screen from China that doesn't work right. It's also a hard decision between 100-150 for a new scrfeen, vs 200-250 for a used 950.

It is one of the easier phones to take apart, no picks needed, no adhesives to remove.

I have a screen for sale in the classifieds section...

camaroz1985,

Thanks, it's good to hear it's easy to replace the screen. I have all the torx drivers and have done a 920 many times (my daughter had an issue with her phone and gravity). I've replied to your for sale post and will buy the used screen from you.

Greetings,
My wife and I both dropped our 520's and fractured the glass. I was able to replace the glass on one and it works great to this day. I replaced the glass on the second one, but it won't turn on-probably damaged more than the glass.

Youtube makes all this possible. I wish it existed in my younger days-the things I could have learned, repaired, understood;money that could have been saved, perhaps even earned!!

Happy ending for me... got the used screen from camaroz1985 yesterday and the install was super easy since it already had many of the attached items on it. Didn't have to mess with adhesive or anything like that. The screen had less scratches than my old one and cost less than half of a new one, so I'm happy.

Glad it worked out for you. While the newer phones might lack the solid feel of the old 920/1020, etc. they are miles easier to repair, with far less chance of breaking things.

Just how easy is it to replace the screen? If only the glass is cracked, can that part be replaced or does it require an entire display assembly with LCD/digitizer plus the glass etc.?

It seems that B2X uses Palcotech for repairs, and the Palcotech website estimates $259 to repair a "broken screen" on the 950.

From everything I have read, you have to replace the LCD and glass as one unit. I don't like that design, but apparently bonding the glass to the LCD makes the phones thinner. I got lucky and found a used screen in perfect condition that had some of the attached parts already attached so it was easier than it would normally be.

You need to replace the glass and screen together. There are places that sell just the glass, but it is basically impossible to separate and rebond the glass. You need to buy the front housing with the screen and glass. It won't be as easy as it was for dacarter77, but it isn't hard. You just need to take your time, and anything you take off the old screen you put on the new one.

Is it possible to find OEM/Microsoft replacement screens? My 950 still works fine, and I also have the 950XL I got with the BOGO, but the cracked screen on the 950, which isn't nearly as bad as most I've seen, bugs the heck out of me. I'm not sure it's $259 worth of bugging me, but still...

I could not find the screen on the normal web sites like etradesupply.com, but there are some on ebay. Hard to tell if they are OEM or not. These are the pitfalls of owning a rare phone I guess. I now have a protective case (it will cover up the beautiful $45 mozo chrome/leather case) and tempered glass screen protector on order to help keep this from happening again.

Just a heads up the mozo cases are a little thicker than the original back cover, and some cases don't fit well.

Thanks, yes, I ended up digging out the original back and installed it. The new case fits better over it than the Mozo. Even though I liked the Mozo, I'm liking this new black case, nice change. It's shiny on the sides and matt black on the back. So far so good.
