Does the Lumia look like a flagship device??

My question is, where are the equivalent threads for the Samsung Ativ? Why arent the same questions being asked about that device?
Well, I noticed a huge positive buzz about the ATIV, short of it's name. You will find negative comments, but the threads (and there were quit a few in the days following it's 4 or 5 minute introduction) were mostly positive and excited. We are just happy that Samsung designed a handset that had a few new wrinkles to it for WP 8 and wasn't just a pure GS3 rehash. It had a different chassis and they talked about it being an "exciting" part of the Windows and Samsung ecosystem. That is good stuff compared to how little they promoted their Focus line of devices.

Besides, I think we have gotten to the point where we hold Nokia to a higher standard. We EXPECT a full fledged Hero device from them, and a set of devices that will propel WP to new sales levels in 2013.

We are just glad Samsung didn't follow LG's lead.

sharpest looking device on the market IMO... unless you like the tired old "look like every other touchscreen" phones

Yes, it is a flagship phone and it looks the part. Thankfully they offer two colors in matte, but regardless, it's a flagship phone.

Interestingly, several Android users I know on two other forums are expressing interest in this device. This may be better than the Ativ S and the HTC 8X (which I assume will basically be the One X with WP8) for poaching people from Android, because it's so different aesthetically and technologically (OIS) from what they have.

matt?? the new Lumias? what colour is matt? I only see the glossy plastic in yellow..

I don't see how the 920 has old specs when it runs the same processor at the GS3, One X and the Ativ. I think it's a top phone. Can't say how well it will sell, but I'm interested.

No, the production house, hand in glove with the ad agency failed. #EPIC failed.

...which still has no bearing on if the device itself is worthy of being called a flagship device.

The whole ad failure is a different thread.

I see it like this.

Samsung is that hot and nice girl that doesn't want to date you. Nokia is the hot and nince girl that likes you.

When Nokia does nice things for you, you take her for granted. After all, she already likes you. If she wants your attention, you want her to do more.

If Samsung throws a smile your way you're excited. And then if she agrees to join you for a movie, she's suddenly the best thing in the world.

Forget that Nokia went with you to a movie, dinner, long walks on the beach, and has listened to you rattle on about all thing things in your life.

So yeah, this is what it seems like to me. Sometimes guys are jerks.

The more I think about it, there is a more straight forward problem and it impacts all of the platforms - what we are currently getting are revisions rather than revolutions and often of things that matter to geeks but not to normal people - until someone comes up with something radically new (and no I don't know what it is - if I did, I wouldn't tell you) - whether that's liquid quantum-technetium ghostfeeds or holographic displays or... whatever.. I think it's going to be harder and harder to wow the public.

LG put a projector on a phone. A PROJECTOR.

The response from the public? Ho hum.

I think as techies, we like features. But the general populace just wants to be told what's cool.

I think the 920 will be my next phone but I don't think it's particularly competitive - when a consumer walks into a store, I think they will look over and see that lumia thing that decided not to buy last year running that windows thingy they were not interested in.

I think WP8 will end up as a distant third like DKP23 will end up as a distant third and that's only because RIM is so dysfunctional that they will fail to get BB10 off the ground.

Hit the nail on the head with the first paragraph.

Totally agree. And to add to that, I think most general consumers are attracted towards the vibrant colorful visuals of androids and iphones.

I think wp8 will draw attention and have people check it out and play with it but some people don't have the patience to learn something new. So they'll tinker with it but will likely be drawn back to android or iOS unless the sales reps in stores really lobby hard for a windows phone sale.

I honestly don't think any Lumia phone will ever be truly huge in the market because most people just hate the WP UI.

You said everything I wanted to so I am just going to add "Make that 2".

"What we are currently getting are revisions rather than revolutions"...I like that bit the best.

So the Optical Image Stabilization system that uses a new floating lens technology to allow steady photos and great night shots without a flash is merely a revision?

Pretty much yeah from a consumer perspective - it's a better mousetrap rather than a new thing. The only way it would create real buzz if consumers spend their time standing around taking shots with their various smartphones for the purpose of discussing and comparing the results - which they ain't going to do.

Honestly, this week I was more interested in the Kindle Whitepaper than any of the phone stuff.

The regular crowd goes by "more the merrier" logic. May it be RAM, MP, GHz, or Storage space.

People don't know PureView as they know Retina Display.
So saying "PureView" as opposed to "16MP" doesn't really turn any head, IMHO.

Funny since PureView is a REAL technological innovation, while Retina Display is just a higher resolution screen.

Maybe Nokia should also push salespeople to talk about the PureMotion HD+ screen.

Better resolution than "retina display"
Faster refresh rate to eliminate blur
Ultra sensitive screen, allowing real stylus, fingernail, gloves, or a variety of other types of touch
The BEST LCD display to be seen in sunlight

Exactly my point. People are unaware of it. You, me and the entire tech community know it in and out. But the common masses are too busy with their lives to care about a new camera technology introduced by Nokia.
