FIXED! Lumia 920 screen dark during call

Brilliant! I cleaned the screen with a cloth, dialed while on the desk and used bluetooth headset and it would still go dark like my face was near it. One puckered blowout and voila! no issues. Who would have guessed that the proximity sensor would get a pile of dust. Thanks for the tip.

I'm going to have to send mine in, I think. I ended up buying the OFFICIAL Nokia CC-1043 case and that screws with the light sensor in mine, too. :(

Guys, there is no permanent fix for this other than repair or replacement. It's an over-sensitive proximity sensor. I had the same thing after 1 week of use, tried the blowing trick, worked for a while, then it just got worse. Skype calls were even worse, no end call button, just the lock screen. I finally got in touch with Nokia directly and got a replacement. Since then, 2 months of use, not 1 issue.

I did a hard reset to factory settings and it went away, since December. Never another problem

I removed the dust from the space. Between screen and the polycarbonate body with the help of a paper and it worked for me .
And i only did it for the space next to the volulme button, it worked for me.. :)

I just removed my plastic protection and case solved.
The screen is just tooooo sensitive...

My front facing camera died, and along with it the proximity sensor. Waiting for refurb swap to arrive in the Mail. Had the dust in the ff camera issue too. Hopefully the refurb will be better sealed, because it's darn hard to hang up a call with a black screen :)

How were you able to finagle a refurb-swap? I was thinking the only way was to send it in first.
Please...share you secrets!

Having the same problem! Up until now a hard reset did the trick. Not any more. If i press the nokia logo very hard the screen does indeed come back on. Tried the dyson over the earpeice and headphone sockets for 30 secs and this looks like it has done the trick for now. I'll monitor and if the problem comes back, like some suggest it will (over active proximity sensor) Nokia said to try the shop / website the phone was bought from for a refund / return / exchange. If I didn't have any luck with that route nokia (UK) said I could send the phone to them for repair / replacement.

Same problem. Phone has an obvious design flaw. I'll try the air to get dust out of the front camera/sensor. If I could swap it for another phone (different one) at this point, I would. Hugely disappointed, I don't have time for this.

I'm glad it worked out. I haven't had any problems but I'm also constantly cleaning my phone because I'm a nerd like that.

AT&T US standard 1st year device support - brought it in to the local device troubleshooting center after a visit to an AT&T storefront, although I think you can do it via 611. Doing it in person lets them verify the device is water damage free and in good shape up front.

For me, blowing air only worked temporarily. The problem has always returned. So I spoke to Nokia and they said they had a fix for this in the service shops and that the phone should be handed in for a permanent fix. So I did so today. The LED flash doesn't work either so it's just as well.

I think that if this problem comes back again and again on your phone, you should get it fixed properly while it is still under warranty. I read somewhere that there are two metal plates that are to close or something and that it can be fixed by inserting something between them.

My worry now is that the drones that service phones for my carrier will google the issue and then blow air into it and write it off as fixed after I have waited for weeks to get the phone back. I also worry that they will reset the phone for no reason whatsoever so that I will have to spend hours upon hours setting it up again. But I'll try not to be too pessimistic in advance.

UPDATE:
The solution is simple, hilarious yet kinda sad. Just pucker your lips and blow the dust off the top edge of the screen. That's it.

It's so very disappointing to have such an issue on such a top-notch device... And the design seems to be so mature, what with it traced all the way from N9... But there you go.

.

Bro, I'd kiss you if I could! I was experiencing exactly the same problem when making calls, specifically skype calls, and I tried everything. I was sceptical but I tried a Skype call, the display turns blank as usual and so I blew the air from the top of the cellphone and.. voi la!

Thanks!

I would really LOVE to give my phone to you to use that simple solution to blow off the dust.. :asleep: , I have the dust issue.. I took the phone to Nokia Care, they cleaned it and I got it again..right now I blow air for 5 minutes and I still have the dust.. people are looking at me like crazy.

The solution is simple. Just do not cover the proximity sensor when listening to a call or voicemail. The proximisty sensor is just above and to the left of the word Nokia at the top of the screen. If you hold the phone in your left hand and keep your right wrist at the bottom of the phone rather than at the right side, then your fingers won't cover the sensor. The purpose of the sensor is to turn the screen off when you are holding the phone to your ear.

It does this even if I set the damn thing down on the table. :|

If you are using a screen protector trim the top right section the covers the 'nokia' logo & voila!:orly::cool::confused::love::love:
