The 1308 firmware update seems to have helped me a lot. I just made a phone call and it never went off at all the whole. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that over time dust/face oil won't impact it like it has in recent-past.

Are you talking about the 1232.5957.1308.0001 ?

If so, then yes it did! My front carmera is very, very bad. Could not see the call screen, etc.... Since update, all is working again....

Hey,

I upgraded to the Lumia 920 from the Lumia 800 the second it was available and I keep having the screen go black during calls, hence replying to these posts. I've sent the phone back to get fixed and was given a different Lumia 920 as a temp phone until my phone came back. Same problem happened with the temp phone! Then my Original Lumia came back and after 2 weeks, same problem again! I've sent it back and now they have given me a Samsung ATIV S (which I don't like as much as the Lumia 920) and the camera stopped working on the 2 day!

So, I need to make a decision on whether I keep persisting with the Lumia 920 (which I absolutely love everything about the phone....................except that it keeps 'breaking down'!) OR do I switch to a ATIV S (which broke on the second day) OR do I switch to the dark side - Android / Apple (AHHH!!!) ??????? I really want to keep using the Lumia 920 but simply cant afford the downtime and hassle of unreliable phones, factory resets, downloading all the apps again, syncing emails etc etc etc

Maybe I'm just having really bad luck?? What are your thoughts?

Do u know which software is in the phone? With Portico it was common, but with 1308 it has been straightened out, so when u get ur Lumia back, look for this info. If the update is not yet ready for ur region, u might want to force an update thru Nokia Care Suit, in order to have a fully functional phone. U may also call ur Nokia representatives where u have sent ur phone, to have them update the phone for u.

Hey, i don't actually know what software i have? But I'll definitely find out when i get my phone back, thanks for the advice. I also found of bunch of Lumia 920 users with the same issue on the Nokia support discussions. Its such a widespread (and annoying!) problem. Anyway check the thread out below, basically the same solution - dust getting into through the speaker adn making its way across the proximity sensor (by the N on the Nokia label). At least there is a fix now, I'm stoked!!

Hey people just fixed it or me. If you have the screen cover check that it doesnt block the proximity sensor.

Again check its not the screen cover

Good luck people, tell me if it works for you

What ultimately worked for me was calibrating the proximity sensor. Mine is a new Android 6" phablet, so I suspected it was a "settings" issue rather than a dust problem. But before I resolved my problem, I read every forum I could find on the topic. So, I thought it might be helpful to provide a summary of nearly ALL of the "fixes" I ran across, with the hope that one of them will work for you! You might get a chuckle out of some of these, as well. I sure did.

Calibrate the Sensor
Step-by-step:
1:Choose Settings;
2:Choose Display;
3:Choose Als_ps calibration; (may be worded differently on your phone)
4: Use a finger or other object to COVER THE SENSOR;
5: Follow the calibration prompts carefully.
(In my case, I simply had to click "Calibrate" followed by "OK".

Clean the Sensor
  • "Just pucker your lips and blow the dust off the top edge of the screen. That's it."
  • "take an old toothbrush and clean out the earpiece"
  • Spray a burst of compressed air into the orifices of your phone.
  • Simply wipe away smudges on the outside of the sensor and front-facing camera lens

Uncover the Sensor
Make sure that the sensor isn't obstructed. Did you remove the packing film? If you are using a cover, does it obscure the sensor at all? If so, remove the cover, cut out the appropriate corner, and replace.

Misc. Random and Quirky Ideas (quoted)
aka "The Users and Pushers Fix"
  • "For me help came with using front camera, probably adjusts the sensitivity for light. Very bright out, so indoors phone thinks that the sensor is blocked all the time."
  • "The camera trick didn't do it for me until I took a video using the front facing camera."
  • "apparently if you put pressure between the att logo and the ear speaker on the top of the phone, the screen comes back on" (My phone isn't ATT, and it doesn't have a logo, but, hey, I'm trying to be thorough...)
  • "try gently pushing your screen 'in' this cured the issue for me for my old 920 what used to click when i pressed the top"
  • "Try pushing hard on the ear speaker(left next to your front camera) "
  • "uninstalled Skype, took a photo & video with the front camera and soft-rebooted,"
  • " I reboot my phone in a really dark room. After that my phone keeps working for a few days"
  • "shining a very bright light into the proximity sensor"
  • "I powered off the phone, then covered the proximity sensor (near the front camera and the Nokia logo), and powered it on again in a dark place"
  • re "my Lumia 920 on EE in UK, ... I have since installed the 1308 update and this has sorted out the issue"

Most Creative Idea*
[Warning: Do Not Try This At Home, or May Be Hazardous To Your Health. Just sayin'.]

"need to open the phone (only two screws ;-) ) .... I just added a peace of sponge (W:4mm/H:5mm/L:15mm) (all weather door and window sealant) -that comes self adheasive from one side- and sticked a small peace on the board on the opposite side of the phonejack/secondary mic connectors ... this will add pressure on the board to be more tight ;-) tried it and working as normal. "
*See entire post here. There are pictures!

A Summary of the Summary
  • If you have a NEW PHONE, it is probably a calibration issue.
  • If you have a phone that was working properly before but is no longer being cooperative, it is probably a dirt, dust, or obstruction issue.

Anyone remember the days of rotary dial phones. It was so much simpler...

Hi All

I have the 820 with the same problem. i cleaned the sensor and reset the phone and updated the firmware and still no different. the screen went black as soon as i made a call. i could press the screeen in the top right corner and it would come on briefly

Good news i have fixed it easily. may be different for others but you may want to try this.

I download nokia pc suit and in the trouble shooting option there is a option tool called test and in there is a option to recalibrate the proximty sesnor. takes two seconds and the phone now works great no more problems. so its just a calibration issue from manufacture or age changes the anolugue readings. but once they are reset job done.

i hope this helps

There was no obvious dust in the lens, even shining a flashlight into it. There was no obvious dust in the mouthpiece. There was nothing obviously obscuring the proximity sensor. I did, however, have a screen protector which was NOT on the sensor.

Still, I trimmed it back so it was completely below, rather than around, the sensor. And Hey presto! My phone now works properly as a phone!

Thanks for the tips guys.
