Holding Down both volume buttons and the power button?

My screen froze and was unresponsive. I did soft reset (power and volume down) like 30 times and it didn't work. I took it to the verizon store and the lady fixed it in like a minute saying that she held down volume up, down and the power. I have seen no where else that this is even a thing. Did this do something different than the soft reset I was doing or did she just get lucky?

I just hold the volume button right in the middle and I hold the power button at the same time until the phone shuts off by itself
in other words I don't "slide down to power off" I leave it and the phone shuts itself off, vibrates and quickly restarts.
That is a soft reset.

Holding the volume down and power off until it shuts down and then vibrates is a soft reset.
