How do I change the metadata of photos?

I've got some old photos in my collection, which I received from my parents. The dates are impossibily off (December 31, 2097). I've asked my folks for an estimate as to when they were taken, which I've supplied me with. I got into the Photos app to try and edit that metadata, but it doesn't looks as though I can. I can change things like it size, background color, etc., but not the date the photo was taken. How do I edit that?

Xnview for desktop has tools for editing EXIF and metadata.
It's a great free photo viewer for Windows.
