How do I get Windows 10 to use the tv's hdmi audio instead of pc audio?

I'm using the hdmi adapter for the Surface Pro 3 to use my tv as a 2nd monitor, but it will only use the Surface's sound. I can see the hdmi audio listed as one of the audio sources when I right click the sound icon in the taskbar and go to "playback devices", but it won't use it. When I try switching the default audio to hdmi I can see the bar moving as if it's properly feeding the sound to hdmi but I don't get any sound. It'll only play sound if I use the Surface's sound. Help?

If you are going to Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Sound, then I suspect the monitor. Works fine, for me.
