How is auto brightness supposed to work?

Hi there ladz and gents,
could you please tell me if my phone is working as it is supposed to or is it faulty? Brigtness is set on auto/ high. Whenever phone gets close to source of light screen gets really bright (as I assume it is supposed to) and it stays like that, even if I take the phone to completely dark room, however locking and then unlocking device in said dark room brings brightness down again... Restarting phone doesn't change anything. Working as intended?

I've read about this problem before and a possible fix is to go into a dark room with no light, then unlock the phone and slide the screen up. Stay there for a little while to recalibrate the ambient light sensor.

Thanks for input, didn't work for me, though... Seems like my phone is capable of bringing brightness up only.. as soon as it gets really bright it stays like that no matter full daylight or complete darkness

Gaaahhhh. I have just performed soft restart and my phone is stuck with Windows Phone logo....

Edit: Managed to bring it back to live ( I wish I bricked it so I can just go and get replacement... too many issues for almost 600$ device)
