So basically, HTC's not doing anything, until Microsoft does something (they have the software), but Microsoft won't release the update until HTC gives out an update, so they can deliver their update.

And I bet they will be shocked why people will go with a Lumia next time (I mean those who don't give up on the platform entirely).

I actually do. It would perfectly be in the realm of their incompetence, as far as communicating and working together with their partners go.

Not that HTC is any different. As soon as there's a new device around, they quickly dump on the old ones. And not just WP phones; my friends who have HTC handsets running Android often complained about this. On the bright side: now I can join them and we can complain together. :D

At this point I've given up nearly all hope of getting Cortana or any updates soon. Might see if 3 will let me swap my 8S for a Lumia. That or wait out the long months in bitter regret till my upgrade...

This may be a dummy questio but how is that going to work. I mean we are on developer preview and we can't go back. Nokia kit won't work on our devices. As far as I know we get the updates directly from Microsoft (if/when supported). So how are we going to get the firmware update?

As far as I know, firmware updates are pushed from the manufacturer through Microsoft. Like of how you can get driver updates through Windows Update on a PC. HTC need to make/finish this firmware update, then they can distribute it to their devices via Microsoft. I was on the developer preview before when I got some HTC updates, so it shouldn't cause issues.

I still wonder how Lumias without Cyan (which is firmware too) got the update. Why we can't get the Update 1 without firmware update?

I have a friend with an unlocked 8X. While he only got the 1st update and not the actual 8.1 Update 1 part, he claims the phone is much faster now. It starts/restarts faster now. Unlocking the phone is now instantaneous and scrolling has never even been smoother. He says it may be placebo, but he thinks that almost all apps now open/rezume faster. Even Skype now opens in 2 seconds and and rezumes in 0-1 second.

EDIT: Just realized there are two updates, 2nd one nowhere to be found. This is BS

WTH, My Canadian 8X got the 899 update but no alpha cortana for Canadian language and no Cortana for UK settings and no Live Folders.. so basically not the GDR1 update even though it's labeled as such

My short story - HTC 8X in Norway. I got the 12400.899 this morning in Norway. It seems to have the same OS-version number as Nokia Cyan. Nearly all of You seem to have got this much earlier....how long must I now wait for this update

We need the firmware update. Hope htc delivers it soon.

I'm getting a notification on my 8S that there is a software update, and when I initiate the download it says "Downloading updates 0%". However, it never moves past 0%. Is this the same behaviour other 8S/8X users are seeing? Or are you not getting a notification for an update at all?

Yeah that update has ironed out a few issues I had with my 8X.
