I think Nokia and Microsoft have blown it

I was really disappointed at first but thinking back the 920 has some really good features going for it especially the camera. No one can come close to that camera, not even in 3 years time! What did make this an event a huge let down was whatever MS did leaving it all with a sour taste. Nokia did their part but I think this event would have been better if it was held to a similar date to HTCs (After Apples event) and hope to get some pricing and release date with it.

I was really hoping to see something today that would make me want to come back to WP.

Just wait for 8.5, which is coming soon! It will fix all the problems, and I hear Nokia has a killer new Lumia 990 coming out that will REALLY rock! They'll be showing it in July 2013 and shipping it in December of 2013, but it will totally kick everyone else's butt! You've gotta believe! You've gotta...

...oh forget it.

I don't blame you, man. Microsoft seems almost determined to ensure that Windows Phone fails.

The more I think about it, the more baffled I am by doing the demo today - it really offers no advantage by coming before the iphone event next week because the consumer couldn't act on what they had seen and is still in the dark about what's so great about wp8 that wasn't evident in 7.

I can see exactly what Microsoft is trying to do and in theory this is a good strategy. They want to unveil the full OS in October at their own event where they will invite all the carriers and OEMs on stage to announce dates, prices, etc. All at once, all available within days. In that sense it's good to already know what these phones are as you don't need to go in depth detailing each of them and the event can be focused on the software instead.
However that's only good if said Microsoft event happens close enough to all the hardware reveal. I think they would have been better served having all the phones revealed in October to get the momentum going very high up until launch.

Good point, Tahiti Bob. Although with all these hardware reveals without pricing and availability, the average observer sees "no pricing, no availability" and just forgets about the hardware altogether. After all, there are plenty of sexy Android and Apple options out there that they can buy either now or very shortly.

But to my mind, that is why it makes no sense to have the OEM presentations *before* the WP8 announcements, you want the WP8 announcement quickly followed by OEM presentations which all conclude with "available for pre-order today".

No wonder Apple and Samsung are eating everyone's lunch - when Samsung announced the Galaxy S3, they didn't conclude with "oh yeah, it will be out sometime in selected markets", we got times, carriers and prices.

I bet the Lumia 920s camera will not be THAT special, anyway Nokia themselfs will definitly release a better phone camera within three years.

People are complaining about no launch date for these phones, but no one is remembering that WP8's official launch will be at the end of October. This has been known for quite a long time now, so how can you expect the phones to come out sooner all of a sudden?

No surprise there. Their devices aren't too inspiring and they are already being upstaged by Google and Motorola less than 12 hours later.

Upstaged in what manner? Bigger battery? Even fandroids weren't gushing over the Motorola devices.

If you honestly believe Moto's phones today were better than Nokia's then I don't know what to say.

It was weird considering devices are not coming out until first week of November... but then a few IT buddies here watched the event and they gonna go with the iPhone 5 until they saw the camera stuff... now they are gonna wait. I suppose if you get enough stories about the camera out there you can get some people to wait.

You're joking right? Their announcement today has been pretty evenly panned on the big tech blogs. Whoever decided to allow the worlds worst wallpaper for that demo is probably out of job as we speak. Did you just join today to troll?

I think they only thing they blew was not having a presenter with more excitement. That first lady probably had have the audience sleeping or at least not paying attention.

Think about how many people you know with an iPhone or Android. A very small percentage were waiting for new product announcements or the newest latest. Most probably bought them because of a salesperson at a store, a commercial or because a friend talked about it.

It's obviously a great product. It needs to be sold. Good products fail without good salespeople and inferior ones succeed because of good ones. I think with the new MS stores they are opening, the release of W8 along with exciting new tablets. Will slowly equal growing number of sales of WP8 devices.

I just expected more from Nokia after all the trash talking to Samsung.

Think about the people waiting to get their first smartphones, i.e. most people. Do you think they'll go for an iPhone 5 or GS3 both available in a week or two or wait for a device they don't know anything about except it takes great pictures?

I just expected more from Nokia after all the trash talking to Samsung.

I think Nokia's offering is far better than what Samsung showed us, mostly because of their exclusive apps like Nokia Drive, Music, City Lens, plus all their photography stuff. Not to mention the screen itself where living in Michigan I can finally purchase a winter glove that does its intended job of keeping my hands from freezing instead of finding one that can work with my phone. That alone is amazing.

For me, the 920 looks better, especially after discovering that the backplate on the Ativ S is just plastic (though very well disguised plastic).

Nokia, IMO, lived up to their gentle trash talk with Samsung.

For all we know Samsung could also have killing software on the Ativ S like they do on the GS3. They weren't allowed to show any software so there's no evidence that Nokia's offering is far better (even if it's a fair assumption).

I'm going on past experiences. The Samsung 'exclusive' apps are crap right now on my Samsung Focus. Nothing they have shown me in the past has lead me to believe that this time they'll have some crazy awesome exclusive apps in the realm of Nokia's.

They could surprise us, but I'm not putting much stock in that.

I really want this L920 though. Man, that phone looks awesome! I'm developing a love-hate relationship with my Focus. It gets the job done, but the battery gets sucked dry for me.

Samsung have possibilities now they didn't have back then thanks to Windows 8. For a start they could just port all their "S" software from the Galaxy line if they wanted too. Assuming they're going to deliver crap stuff based on no evidence is a bit silly. Judging on past experiences Lumia phones have crap cameras but Nokia showed today they could improve that so every OEM should at least be given the benefit of the doubt until they're devices are out.

So rumours are surfacing that Amazon will announce a phone tomorrow, that's not going to make things better is it? You can bet it's going to be cheap just so people are very tempted to get one.
