I7 screams

I installed the Intel Extreme tuning. Current score 330. Max processor 2.79 GHz highest temp 91.

Problem is you can't just do the benchmark. The throttling never kicks in till about 5-10 min in. Right now for me the GPU is being throttled harder than the CPU

I returned my Galaxy Note 10.1 to the store and traded in my laptop to get the SP3 i5. I love it, and it does everything amazingly well. But I think I'm gonna invest in the $70 Kindle because it is so light and easy to use in a crowded area. I feel like the two devices complement each other. I'm an avid reader, so I think E-Ink is the only way to go.

I also use my Surface Pro 3 and Kindle Paperwhite 2. I agree that e-ink is best if you read a lot.

Running Visual Studio 2013, Eclipse and SQL management studio without a hiccup. The i7 is truly a monster. Way to go MS.

I'm glad I held out for the I7 512. The power is awesome... this is truly a desktop replacement for me. I bought the latest and greatest 4yrs ago and the surface pro 3 has exceeded my performance needs.

Are your power plans missing like they were on mine?

isn't that due to the connected standby?
I'm in Europe so I have to wait a bit longer for SP3 but from what I read I understood there were no power plans because of connected standby

Dude I was amazed at how fast it downloaded and installed VS2013. A few minutes and I was ready to go.

That's because they're missing, something to do with hyper v. You can disable it, but with that comes the sleep option missing. It was a lose -lose deal for me.

Try Win8 Store Pinball FX2 on battery with your i7 Surface 3 Pro. It "screams" slower than an Intel Atom Z3740 due to SP3's aggressive throttling :(

The power plans are missing, I think I read somewhere that you can use hyper v to get around this.(Please correct me if I am wrong), But the throttling definitely occurs. On the flip side though, I ran Bioshock Infinite at 1080p, and the game ran fine. Even with the throttling it was still very enjoyable. Putting it up to full resolution was a problem, it was lagging bad. I am not for sure what the frame rate was, but it was borderline unplayable. For me though the game play is good enough. Would I rather have my games at full resolution and high frame rates, sure I would. Do I want to lose the benefits of having a tablet by getting a Razer Blade or Alienware laptop? No I do not.

The return policy is fairly liberal from both Microsoft and Best Buy. I would recommend getting the tablet and trying it out. Sometimes benchmark numbers and statistics don't tell the whole story. Get one and try it, it might just meet your needs.

I think I'm going to wait on the dock to see if anything changes. There are rumors that the dock will allow SP3 to change it's throttling a bit so I want to test that out. But I've come to terms with the SP3 giving up a bit of its power for the versatility.

Well, my i7 256GB that i picked up on Friday has been stellar so far. It is doing tasks significantly faster than my 3 year old Desktop computer in my office............Dell Z600 Workstation with Xeon E5620 @ 2.4ghx, with 8GB of RAM, and Nvidia Quadro 2000 GPU.

I am an Architect, and I dont really care about benchmarks.......so i made my own using the most graphically intense software (other than a game) that I would be using (note - I do not do renderings, I do 3D models, but no lighting / effects - those are all done by consultants):

Booting Revit 2014 with nothing running:
SP3 = 14 seconds
Z600 = 48 seconds

Opening and converting a 200MB Revit file from Revit 2013 to Revit 2014
SP3 = 13 mins
Z600 = 20 mins

Those are pretty good returns to me.............Considering the PC costed 3g's when my office bought it, its a desktop computer, and the SP3 is technically a tablet, and costed half as much $

You can disable hyper v, but then you'll lose your sleep option. Every time you hit the power button it'll go into hibernation.

I agree, having the versatility is key. I'm curious to see if SP3 will perform better with the docking station. Why make us wait 15 days... ugh!

Hi,

I want to replace my current laptop.
I normally run Visual Studio and Adobe CS3 plus VMs which contain SQL Server, Sharepoint and Linux among other things.
My current laptop is :

Core i5 2.5
16 GB RAM
500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive
DVD drive

Will the Core i7 with 8 GB cut it especially with VMs? Also most of the software I have are on DVD hence I definitely need a DVD drive? I can't see any accessory with DVD drive on MS store?
Any ideas?

Regards,
Gemma

Seeing that the SP3 has a full sized USB port, you could just get an external USB DVD drive, even if there was an official accessory, not sure why it would be worth paying extra for one when there are plenty of other cheaper solutions, most likely. Can't you use the software without the DVDs, though? Seems quite old school to me, the Surface Pro mght not be the device you need if you regularly need a DVD drive
