installing windows 10 on 8.1(non update)

I have a windows 8.1 laptop that I haven't updated in over a year because the 8.1 update update didn't initially work with it correctly(HP Probook 4540s). I was wondering if I could/should just use the media tool to install windows 10 now or if I should update windows 8.1 to the latest update before doing so.

Re: installing windows 10 on 8.1(non update)

you can update straight from the current OS version you have....you might need to install some security updates that prepare the device for windows 10 but other than that, you don't need to update to 8.1 to make the jump

I would try installing 10. If you download the Windows 10 update tool and try updating, it should work without requiring you to upgrade to the latest updates for 8.

I do have windows 8.1. In fact the version literally just before the update. But thank you.
