Is my mini-displayport connector broken?

Now i have tried two different mini-displayport to vga adapters and neither of them works. The first one is not recognized at all. The Second one, a generic adapter bought at the local Electronics store was equally unsuccessful.

So what is the story. I thought that displayport was a standard. Advice please.

I used two...
Hama and original apple one.
Both were thunderbolt i guess, so maybe that is it.

I heard that those cheap ones have some issues.

Honestly just get the official one. I tried the cheap one first and it didn't work. Maybe they don't fit properly or something

I've used both an Apple and a generic from eBay and both worked fine.
