I basically uninstalled every app and I am reinstalling them as needed so far things still work. Will keep an eye on it see when it seems to break.

I think this is one thing WP8 really need to fix in next big update. Live tiles not being updating at all doesn't give the OS a good impression, they should try to make them truly "alive" at all times, without killing the battery life

Hey Mr. Brown,

What a total pain in the @rse... but it seems to have worked!!! Excellent.

I deleted the App social apps, went thru each app one by one and disabled any live tile reference.

Stopped them all in the Background Task menu.

During this very long winded process, my Weather App updated ....

Now only have WhatsAp, Weather and a Battery App live so will monitor...

Thanks again.

Yup I blocked all apps and then turned them back on one by one

What I mean is, you have to go into each app's settings and make sure the live tiles and such are disabled there, not just what's on the background tasks list. Some apps are not controlled via that list and don't even show up there, but will still take up a "slot" for a background agent. If you get too many agents running, you get intermittent and/or deal live tiles.

We spoke too soon....

The Weather and Battery apps updated themselves during this lengthy process but have since refused to update at all. I have downloaded two further battery apps, neither of which updated so removed them.

As I mentioned earlier, I have removed the Social Apps, opened every single app one by one and removed the live tile where applicable. I got a message saying I had hit my limit part way through so went to background tasks and blocked everything.

Then I carried on opening and disabling the tiles.

Finally returned to background tasks.

Disabled everything.

Soft Reset.

Enabled WhatsAp, Weather & Battery,

WhatsAp works but neither Battery or Weather,

They are the only 3 apps live in background tasks.

Any other ideas :( ?

On my 820 I have 25 live tiles all working fine on my start screen. Not to mention other apps with background permissions. All works well. So, what is this limit supposed to be, 15? Not on the 820 it's not. Is there an offical quote from Nokisoft or Microkia that confirms what the limit is at all? Currently, I'm wondering if a limit really exists. It could still be some other issue causing these faults.

Hello, I've been living with the Live Tile issues for quite some time. I never really looked into it until recently though. Thankfully, I was able to get them working again. I believe mine stopped working because I would install everything under the sun on my L920. I think that most apps with Live Tile capability default to enabling the Live Tile even if you don't pin the app to your start screen. With that said, I believe the OS has a limit of 15 apps with Live Tile enabled and when you exceed that count, the Live Tiles will break and or become intermittent. You can have Live Tiles enabled in an App and it will count towards the limit of 15 even though you may have that app blocked in Background Tasks. So the way I got mine working again was I went though and first uninstalled all the apps I never use. Then I went through each remaining app that was installed and disabled the Live Tile functionality within the App if I didn't need the Live Tile (I had already previously blocked most of the apps from Background Tasks). After restarting, my Live Tiles started working again. I currently use the following Live Tiles.

MetroTalk
Battery Pro+
Simple Calendar - I love this app!
Bing Finance
Bing Weather
Windows Phone Central - I've been opening the app like 20x per day looking for new news. Maybe now with my Live Tiles working, I won't have to open it so often!

Since fixing my Live Tiles, I've noticed that my battery life is actually better, even though I had ever single app blocked in Background Tasks before this. Before you say that my Live Tiles didn't work because I had them blocked, I need to say that I've tried enabling the Background Tasks for apps and they still didn't work so I just ended up keeping them all blocked. So now with a handful of apps non blocked and using Live Tiles I'm actually noticing better battery life.

Good luck to those with the issue. It wasn't fast and easy to get mine working, but now I'm happy I went through the trouble.

is that limit of 15 is still in the WP 8.1 DP?
