Exactly- I've no hope of getting the phone back, it's probably already on eBay now, but it's a major failing on Microsoft's part, and they need to sort things out. If I kick up a fuss, hopefully someone will sort things out and close whatever loophole the thieves are using.

One possibility of how the thief got ahold of your account is if you were logged in on your phone browser, or your phone browser had your credentials stored....

Report the phone IMEI number to your network operator as stolen so they can block the phone making it useless as a communication device.

Remote kill switch for phones is coming with Windows 10.

My Windows Phone has a PIN to lock the device, a PIN for the Wallet to prevent anyone except me from buying apps and games and a PIN on OneDrive.

OPs issue could be an issue I've seen reported by others where their phone just disappears from Find My Phone.

Possibly, although I did have a PIN on the phone, and I don't think I was logged in on the phone browser. I don't think I'd ever have reason to.

I've reported the loss to my network, I'll double check that the IMEI has been blocked.
