Lumia 1020 still worth it October 2014?

Im in the US. I'm planning on using Cricket wireless prepaid, because of the 10gb , $60 plan.
Its part of AT&T now and uses GSM phones.

You can get a brand new unlocked 920 in the US for $180-$200 shipped.
I'd suggest you go the extra mile to get the 1020, how much is it in the states unlocked? Considering that both the 1020 and 920 has the same hardware, the 1020 should edge out with the 41 Megapixel camera. Both the 920 and 1020 are close to obsolete, but again, the camera on the 1020 would make your purchase last for a lot longer. Also, the wow factor.

920 and 1020 have NOT the same hardware: IPS screen on 920, AMOLED on 1020, wireless charging integrated to the 920, not the 1020.

In most cases yes the phone are generally comparable aside from the screens and the wireless charging.

The ram itself is a wash since most of the ram goes toward the camera

Was thinking on the same specification of dual core 1.5 Ghz and adreno 225... But okay, different screen, camera sensor, 6 elements lens, wireless charging, 1020 lighter/920 heavier, anything I missed?

No, just no. Though 1020 is still the king of camera phones, its hardware is already outdated. Certainly it will stop being supported soon enough. It won't even receive any new features from Lumia Denim. Better wait for a successor.

Ok so I'm new in the forum and I'd like to give you one more opinion (if you haven't decided yet).
First of all, I'm from Buenos Aires so my english may not be the best. Excuse me for that.
With that being set, let me tell you about my experience with the 1020. I bought the phone exactly one month ago for ARS4000 (about USD470). Electronic devices are a bit expensive here. Previously owned a Nokia N8, a real legend that's been with me for about 3 years (and still working perfectly).
Why did I choose the 1020 instead of, for example, a Galaxy S4? Well, because of the camera. This thing absolutely OUTPERFORMS anything out there. I compared it to an Iphone 5, Iphone 6, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, Moto X, LG G2, Xperia Z2, and guess who wins. Of course. In every aspect. Every other phone may take 20 photos while my 1020 takes only one, but put those 20 photos together and mine is still better. It takes a while to learn to control it, but once you know how to use the ProCam app, results are amazing.
Oh, I almost forgot. It does not need a million of cores, even with two cores it can run smoothly and manage with several apps at the same time.
Cons? Well, the lack of an SD card slot, but the 22/23GB are enough, at least for me.
Every Lumia with WP will satisfy your needs. They are amazing phones, and Android fags know that. Your friends will hate you when their Android devices freeze and restart while your Lumia stay in mint conditions for several years.
Now go to the store, take a picture with the 1020, smile, flutter, and then buy it.

I'm also from Buenos Aires. Did you buy it for Telecom Personal? The price would indicate that.

Now, for all of you in this thread.
I'm currently using a Moto X that will get updateds to Android 5, but I'm tempted with the L1020 as I'm traveling to Europe after Christmass, and would love to take it as an advanced point and shoot camera, instead of taking my DSLR with 3 lenses, and needing to switch them all the time (just a simple Nikon D3100 with a fixed 35mm, the stock 18-55mm and a very old 70-200mm with no autofocus).

It sounds great having such a camera on my pocket, that will also let me have offline maps, email, skype, and many, many apps (probably won't use phone calls, just wifi in hostels and such).

So, would you say I should go get it?

Thanks!

PS: It won't be my first WP device, I had a L620 that I gave to my girl cause she needed something smart (she used to have a Nokia E5). So I'm quite familiar with the interface and how to handle it.

1Gb ram vs 2Gb ram
According to what the moderator a5cent said in a thread about that, the 1020 doesn't really use the other GB for anything besides processing photos. So the other GB is just part of the camera equipment for all intents and purposes (apps can't use it).

So, it's been about a week now. Nobody answered...
Would you guys recommend I get a L1020 as an advanced point and shoot for traveling to Europe in December/January?

Just to let you know, I hate phablets; so no Lumia 1320/1520. Besides, nobody sells them in my country, and Lumia 930/830/730(5) aren't available here also. I can just grab a L1020/925 or I have to stick to Android (remember I currently own a Moto X), and I'm kind of tired of getting followed arround by the big G all the time; although I have to admit there are some good services, I feel it is really intrusive; and everything is donde, just to basically sell ads.

It would be nice if someone answers. Thanks.

Mate, if you want an advance P&S and that you NEED the 41MP, take it. If not, take a 930. The 1020 is a P&W&S. Point and wait and shoot ^_^

But your question about trading off a DSLR vs a smarphone (more handy, offline maps, etc.) is too personal. We can't decide for you so I don't really get what do you expect from us? Please state a more objective and precise question, if you want further details about the 1020.

No way I'm trading my DSLR, it's just as I explained in my first post in this thread. Carrying it around in a bag with 3 lenses (I've already done that a couple of years ago in a trip, and was quite annoying, changing lenses all the time (fixed 35mm F1.8; 18-55 F3.5-56 and ancient 70-200 F4-12).
Also, as I stated in the last post, I would go for a 930, if it was available in my country (third world, bad economy, bad government, almost no imports, no possibility of buying it through eBay or Amazon, because of strict control in the customs). And it won't be worth it to buy it in Europe, because when I bring it back to my country, I'll lose the 3G connectivity (different freq bands), and we still don't have 4G.

I don't mind waiting for about 2 secs between shots, I'm not planning to shoot sports. Just city landscapes, occasional panoramas, some 1080p footage, a couple of night shots and that's basically it. And of course, shot's in the sky while I'm on the plane! But I want to do that with good quality and control. I could borrow a Panasonic Lumix from a friend, cause it's pocketable, but I won't be able to control the parameters of the shot.

I hope that makes it a little bit more clear.

Cheers!

I said trade off, not trade = find a compromise between DSLR+gear versus lighter solution.

Anyway, yes, the 1020 is a superb solution for your holidays to come. Have a look to my flickr Stream (www.flickr.com/photos/n8_massis), I usually shoot when on holidays :)

You will have understood the 1020 is not futureproof at all, won't receive much novelties from Denim (but will get GRD1 and following). If you can accept this, AND find a bargain for the 1020, go for it. And if you can find a camera grip, go for it too :)

Sorry, I misunderstood you about the trade off. This is not my native language, and maybe some expressions do slip off once or twice, hahaha.

Yes, I know the device isn't gonnga get all of the features in future updates, but that is kind of logical due to the SoC it carries inside. But at least it will get updated, and I trust it will get up to W10; yes, with some missing features, but the basics will be there.

Thanks.

Ohh, and I love your photos. Really nice!! I hope to get those kind of pics in my trip!!! In fact, I'll be going to London, so maybe I can replicate a couple of your angles!
Cheers!

I had the pleasure to use the lumia 1020. I liked it, though i didn't love it. Don't get me wrong; that phone takes AMAZING pictures. I'm not sure what those reviewers/comparison sites were on, but there's a HUGE difference in quality between the other phones. Yes those android/ios has very quick shot to shot times, but there's a difference in quality; especially with XENON flash. Combine these with the grip case (extra battery) AND the tripod mount...you are set for good photos (especialyl low light and awesome light trail effects)

However i realised the phone was not for me because i'm not one who will be doing excessive photoshopping, etc, etc. I needed a good quality picture for prints, yet will allow me to get the moment. Hence why i settled with the lumia 1520. With the expected denim update, i'd expect this phone to fully realise it's potential. Yeh there's the odd white balance issue with this phone, but on the whole, it's a good 2nd in the camera phone rank. Plus it has a bigger screen with an extra column for tiles, , an sd card slot (i can move between my old phones/tablet, without transferring data), built in wireless ( i have international version) AND longer battery life...like...much much more.

IMHO, if there was a 1030; i'd have gotten that. i'd sacrifice bigger screen for that sexy hump and better battery life (here's hoping).

Just ordered a 1020 in the UK for ?144 brand new via O2. Will be unlocked and used as a back up to my 930 [to take out on my mountain bike, nights out, family trips etc].

There is the upgrade to the camera grip and headphones for free offer running in the UK too!

Can't wait to get snapping with it!!
