Does anyone know if this phone would work on Ting? Ting supports both CDMA and GSM, but they don't seem to be selling many Windows phones. Trying to get a friend to try Windows.

I'm sure a stupid question but what the hell is Ting?

As to whether a phone will work on a given carrier, which I presume Ting is, it's in the frequency specs once the CDMA/GSM hurdle is crossed. Presuming, also, unlocked.

There are two different, though similar, definitions of Summer. The first, and oldest, is the astronomical definition, i.e. summer solstice to autumnal equinox. Then there's the cultural definition, as in Memorial day to Labor day. Have fun!

I think it's another MVNO, but I don't remember which company is connected to it.

Yes, it will. Just put your T-mobile SIM in it. Prepaid and postpaid T-Mobile use the same network.

You left out the part about calling tmobile so they can update the imie from the phone to that sim... If you don't, when the system does its automatic cross checking, it'll lock that sim out of the network completely, and then you'll have no phone until you go to the nearest tmobile store.

I stopped in and spoke with the visual manager at my local Microsoft Store today. He receives the merchandising directives to setup the store to highlight new items and promotions 3 weeks in advance. He has still yet to receive anything about the Lumia 640. He also said that on average 6-10 people come in asking for this device, daily.

What a cluster fornication. The MS 640 site suggests strongly that only TMO, Metro, and Cricket will get this phone.

You do not have to have a marketing degree from Harvard to see that this phone, at this (pending) moment, especially at $100, a potential game changer. Mr. or Mrs. Average Phone Customer needs to buy a new phone. lessee........hyper expensive iPhones, or, sure, comfortable Androids, oh, BTW, here's the phone that does everything you need and want, is super easy to use.

I would estimate that on an objective basis, this phone is everything 80% of most smart phone users want or need. As they say, it's Microsoft's battle to loose. They should be on the ramparts, forcing this to all the carriers - what? no ATT? - even if at a loss in the short haul. It's close to a dumb phone in pricing, yet feature packed.

Since when? I've had prepaid phones on our postpaid account and never had an issue.

I agree. This is basically the upgrade that Lumia 521 users especially have been waiting for.

I just don't understand why all carriers that are offering one model don't offer the other. Why doesn't Microsoft offer an unlocked version? Or is it they will only agree to sell it as long as Microsoft doesn't offer unlocked versions? I guess, even with Microsoft's financial muscle, they're simply not in a position to strong arm the carriers when their phones aren't the block busters that iOS and Android currently are.

Perhaps prepaid to postpaid is different, but any time I switch from my G3 to M8 or S6 I have to call tmob. The system zapped me one night. That's how I learned.

Were these phones bought unlocked or from T-Mobile?

the only phones anyone in my family have ever used were bought as prepaid and then just installed postpaid sim. (and nothing else was done) we have never had any problems like you described. this includes over a dozen different android and windows phones (ive no personal experience with iphones)

i know you were not asking me, but pretty much all of the phones i mentioned in my last post were bought from places like bestbuy or walmart and are prepaid t-mobile branded. and by far most of them were locked and remained that way. a couple of were locked when bought, but unlocked later. it has been quite a while since i bothered having one unlocked.

also this is kind of off topic, but my mom needed a new phone and i really wanted to get her the 640 (she is on our same family plan) sadly i couldn't wait any longer. luckily she loves the 635 that bestbuy had on sale last week for $49.

Yes, it will work on Ting. All T-Mobile phones work on Ting, with the only exception being a phone whose IMEI has been blacklisted (for nonpayment of an outstanding balance, etc.). The phone does not even need to be unlocked - even T-Mobile carrier-locked phones work on Ting. I am using a T-Mobile-locked Lumia 635 on Ting with no issues, and see no reason why the Lumia 640 would be any different.

You will need to do some fussing around with MMS APN configurations deep in the bowels of your Cellular+SIM settings - but there are instructions on Ting's website for this and they're good.

So yes, you will be able to use the 640 on Ting.

If it ever gets here.

Sigh.

You can buy the 640 right now for $129, can't you?

And how is the service of Ting? Any issues? Talk to me, buddy. Haha

I've bought both locked and unlocked. The last two have been T-Mobile Prepaid. It's just less drama to pick up a prepaid as the last time we bought a phone from T-Mobile, they sneaked a JUMP monthly fee on the bill even though I'd told them I didn't need it and that it especially didn't make sense considering I was paying for the phone in full!

My Dad has a super old WP7 on Tmo that just broke. We tried to find him a 635 or 640, they said 635 is discontinued and no ETA on 640.

Just want to get him a phone that is free or rather cheap on 2 year contract. Looking on their site, they don't show subsidized pricing, ie $0 or $199 with two year contact. I have a cell phone through work so I dont know how it works anymore. We'll probably just get him a cheap iphone, it's a bummer.

Cricket is giving away the 535 for free if you sign up with them. Or you can buy the 635 for 50 bucks. Orrrr buy the 640 for 129 plus tax. Give Cricket a go, they use ATT signals now. Super cheap monthly pre paid plans no contract.

I know Windows Phones STILL don't use PAP authentication for Wi-Fi, but I have yet to use a Lumia device. I'm wondering, does the 640 support PAP?
