Lumia 810 Refurb or Lumia 521? Which one to buy?

Lumia 810 on the Microsoft online store yesterday for $49. No contract, but still must be a new T-Mobile account.

Sorry this is off topic, but if the 810 is so much better than the 521, why replace it with that model on tmo to begin with?

T-Mobile has decided to redo their WP line up. They want a budget handset that they can sell in droves, like the 521. They probably cut a deal with Nokia to have 2 phones...one high end, one budget. The 8X would rest in the middle, probably. They must have felt the 810 wasn't selling. They won't carry too many Nokias at once because they're not the premiere partner. They still screwed the people who bought the 810 though from launch.

Compare the specs on both. 810 is better.

I'm going to look into an unlocked model (sadly that won't be cheap and will hurt my wallet). Going to convince my folks to move over to Tmo's rate plans to get some extra oomph in getting my hands on one.

Well it's sad to hear that the Lumia 810 is EOL and will be replaced with the smaller Lumia 521. As a WP user (have used a HD7 since 2010) I've been wanting to upgrade to a WP8 with 4G capabilities, but still under the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan. So I was thinking, which phone is better, the 810 or 521 on T-Mobile. Special note, I only have enough wiggle room for the refurb 810 ($240) or what is looking out to be $200 for the 521. What are your opinions on which phone I should get?

Wait till the smoke clears over the 810. I have an 810 that I bought within the last month, it's a good phone. I too owned a HTC HD 7 and was using it on the $30 dollar plan. However now that they've EOL'd the 810, a lot of us are concerned whether or not T-Mobile will continue to push out updates to the phone. It hasn't had a firmware update since January.

Unless you absolutely need to jump now, I would not suggest it. I like the phone, but if I was about to make that jump right now given the current situation, I would have likely put it off.

I know it can be tough spending full price on a phone... But when you get down to it, that really does benefit you in the long run because you can use it on any GSM network you want, including the prepaid ones and overseas if you ever want or have to travel. I have an unlocked iPhone 4 I spent a pretty penny on two years ago that is my backup should anything happen with my 810 (such as losing it, which is what I did with a phone in early 2011). I was also consider getting an unlocked Lumia 920 until I got every last tidbit on the 810, though I couldn't really afford it.

Good luck, and I hope you're able to get the phone at a reasonable price!

I feel like after 2 years you would be happier with the 810 than with the 510 in terms of performance because we don't know what updates are coming out in the future. The 810 is new back colors in different colors More Nokia Lumia 810 Colors | Pocketnow

You can't really go wrong with nokia this company will support you for a long time.

I would get the 810 on the basis of having a clearblack display, which makes a huge difference in outdoor use. Both 521 and 810 are under the mercy of Tmobile in terms of updates so no difference there...

i was going to get 810 to replace my 710 but now seeing that it is EOL and the only other option for WP8 with T-mobile is 510 make me sad. wish t-mobile have better Nokia WP8.

Well, it may be best to hold onto your 710 and save your pennies up and grab something in the fall.

If you're stuck between choosing the two, go for the 810.
Okay, it's been EOL'd, but it's still superior to the 521.

Since the 521 is just a 520 variant, it won't have Clearblack and that's a deal breaker for me

^ This. especially if the price of a mint 810 is close to a brand new 521.
