Glad I got my update. So far, it works well on my AT&T 820. I'm sure there are some bugs that I'm not aware of and some other changes for the worse, but in general, the experience is very good.

I am beginning to wonder. More than a few people seem to be having less issues with older devices, while newer devices appear to be getting hit more often with bugs and the such. Or maybe older device users are willing to accept any progress at the loss of some features?

Until you get specific firmware for your device officially from the people who made it, there really is very little room to complain about bugs, battery drain, stability, etc.

this what?

Only sing the praises of the almighty MS and pretend everything is great? The fanforce is strong today...
I'm not defending anything and I'm not a ******. I'm just not going off the deep end about an update I wasn't forced to take. I installed the preview knowing in full that I could have problems and that a hard rest may be in my future. A lot of complainers seem to have overlooked this point. I personally haven't experienced any issues. And I don't think every single aspect of the update is better necessarily. Having the update bork your phone and moaning about some Facebook feature are two different things entirely. Some folks are having actual issues vs. the bunch that are complaining that it doesn't have every single feature they can dream up in it. Some of you guys need to get back on your meds and calm down.

To be honest, i installed 8.1 Dev Preview on April 14th and since the i didn't have one single issue. The new version has basically removed 80% of the issues i had been ranting for months in various forums. It's not perfect but it's usable. I didn't have any error to date. The phone is stable, fast and running strong. I don't deny others may have had issues but it runs like charm on my 1520. I could complain about the things WP 8.1 is still missing or the fact that Cortana is very slow (like in 20 seconds before replying) and not so accurate but it's a Beta Preview. I downloaded it for two reasons:
A) Hope to find a solution to the old BETA Version they called WP 8 and B) Test the new version AWARE IT COULD BE BUGGY.

Complaining about the issues on a Dev Preview version, in my honest opinion, is very unfair. Microsoft has had the courage to throw it at anyone who wanted to try it. It is assumed that users are able to be mature enough to avoid ranting about bugs on a non final version. The OS has limitations it's clear. But if i decide to install a Beta or a Dev Preview (Which is a post Beta but not necessarily a final) then it's my responsibility. Useless ranting!

It is a preview of the final release. In other words, it is the same build sent to manufacturers. It is not beta, and is not full of debug code. Yes, it is instrumented, as are all of Microsoft's products. Yes, Windows 7 phones home and tells Microsoft what features you are using, and more (just like Windows XP, Windows 8, Office, and so on). Yes, there may be updates beyond this one before the push through carriers, but just like the preview of GDR3, the intent upon release was that this is the final build.

No, that is not true. Developer previews are betas, and they are normally done before community previews, which are public betas. Of course MS sends these builds to manufacturers, they want their input as well. This is what they did with win8 as well.

How so? Absolutely nothing wrong with the device or the install EXCEPT for many design decisions that have left many here upset (and confused since they don't address problems, introduce new ones, interrupt work flows, break established UI/UX on the platform).

There is plenty to like about it. But apparently anyone with a complaint should shut up according to the fanboys here. Ridiculous.

Also, it is not a BETA. It is a PREVIEW. Wish all these beta apologists would go ask Cortana for the definition of those two words.

Edit: the biggest overarching feel to the complaints I've seen (and I feel the same): it would be one thing if new features weren't quite there, but they've gone back, broken things, changed things (and not for any visible improvement) etc.

Software release life cycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Developer previews are normally before community ones.

Just saying: Who's complaining to have installed Dev Preview and It works bad, it shows they didn't read the terms and conditions, at least the "risk" part. or somebody put them a gun in the head to install it?

Cortana never takes more than 10 seconds to formulate a reply for me, and rarely even that long. Even when I don't have LTE service...

Has it stopped for those getting the error 80188309 or has it stopped for all?
I'm going to have a new handset in about 3, 4 days and wonder if I'm either lost in translation or they completely stopped the program for everybody?

From the article that Eli A posted looks like devices that were able to get the pre Windows phone 8.1 can still force their phone to update but not any other devices

I'm having buggy glitches with the update but its still worth it I think. There is also a diagnostic tool that you can download to reproduce your bug and report it directly.

In the case of Windows 8, you are right. In the case of Visual Studio, you would be right. But in the case of Windows Phone, you are wrong. This developer preview is the same build that was released to manufacturing before it was released to us. Just like with GDR3.

I said it six months ago, and I was proven right. I'm saying it now, and I will be proven right again.

Just like with GDR3, there may be a bug-fix sent out prior to 8.1 going to carriers, and if so, we will get it just like we did with GDR3, but the build we got was the same build that manufacturers got. All intents are that this is the final build, but again, as I've said before, when you release to a larger group of people, inevitably you will find so-far unfound bugs. It is a basic understanding of software building.

I've given up on hoping that people will understand this, but I commend you for soldiering on. I have no idea why people continue to believe that the Developer Preview is somehow a beta version, I just assume they refuse to accept reality at this point.

Just confirming: I flashed my 520 from a AT&T rom to a stock rom, so I lost 8.1, but I am downloading it again right now, it still works. I had to re-register the phone as developer preview phone too.

You MUST differentiate between the core/system and the apps in the build, and the firmware update. You are missing a lot of things saying that, you are confusing people because that people are thinking that everything will be exactly the same at launch, and it is not true, the core OS will be the same (and really not, because we know that will be an update to the OS), but the apps and the firmware will be different, and some (or all?) bugs can be related to firmware or not updated apps.

As I said before

The version of Windows Phone 8.1 you will get from the developer preview is "final," (note the "" in final) but it does not include any device firmware or driver updates that will accompany the future, public releases of his update on specific handsets. Also, Microsoft typically delivers small post-RTM updates that handset makers include with their phones; this release does not include any of that.
