MS is making a huger mistake here and I'm gonna tell you why.
Apple right now has iTunes the most popular song buying experience out there now it may not be the best but it is the most popular, Now with the purchase of beats they have a streaming service . If you combine the two what do you get? Xbox music.
Think about it, apple keeps what beats has but in addition lets you buy and stream tracks as well and cloud storage!!! You watch, this is what they will do and everyone will say wow why didn't someone think of this before???(They actually did they being MS and the service being Zune) it will in time, I give it about 1-2 years be the dominant music service out THIER forcing MS and other companies to contend for the scraps. MS has no one to blame but themselves, they have a terrible and expensive music service (Xbox music) that they continue to promise to fix while everyone else steals features of Zune and become successful doing it. Well I have been on Zune/Xbox music service for over 5 years and if Apple releases that kind of app, streaming, buying and cloud storage with a music manager for WP I'm going over to the dark side. IMO, this is a turning point not for Apple as much as it is for Xbox music/MS. My advice, roll in and offer 4.2 billion now, that way you'll have all of beats including the app which is way better than Xbox music app that's been in development for 2 years. Remember what I said......

Not how MS works. Yes, they buy things- Skype, Nokia are the two obvious examples- but honestly they put way more money into research and development to develop and own their tech more often. Bing, XBOX, Azure, and so many other examples of developing from the ground up, taking their bumps, and then all the advantages of it fitting with what they want. They spend more a year on R&D then most companies profit. The purchases they have made fits a very specific need: Skype was MS's choice for video calling on their products anyways, and of course we all know the corner MS was in with Nokia.

Apple has more cash on hand. A bidding war would not sit well with investors right now. There is too much uncertainty. MS needs to develop their current properties before going all in with another huge purchase, in my opinion.

Na, they should buy Bose and keep making Xbox Music and Video better in their own way. I can't understand why Beasts is worth 3.5-8 billion though.

I get what your saying but you buy beats to stop apple not to really help yourself. With this purchase they now have a streaming service on all the phone OSs.

I don't think they should buy Beats just in spite of Apple so they can't have it. That's 1st grader logic.

Your not getting it, with this purchase, and because Xbox music is so screwed up, Apple is the dominant force in buying and streaming music. To top that off, beats has a decent app as well. Why would someone want Xbox music over this now?

Apple has always been the dominant force in selling music, and I wouldn't call them dominant in streaming if they buy Beats.

MSFT should buy Rudy's 6studio. For the same amount. 6studio does the same as Beat Music and perhaps better.

Beats are overrated and over priced. Beats are the Monster cable of headphones. You can buy far better for half/two thirds the price from Sennheiser and others.

Not a good idea and from the couple articles I saw today the deal is about to close this week.

To those who say Beats us terrible etc. etc. I say to what other brand of headphones gets as much love, fanfare, ads and mind share than Beats right now? Beats and Apple have a lot of mind share and are perceived as premium products, so it makes sense Beats would catch Apples eye, they both are also very profitable companies.

MS should just bow out of the media sales/rentals. They had a wonderful gem with the Zune ecosystem. (and PlaysForSure before that) They squandered it. I'll never (never is a long time) invest in another Microsoft media store.

Microsoft buying Beats would make no sense, it would essentially be a 'just because' purchase. And to correct something on here Apple already has a streaming service, it is way behind Pandora and friends but Beats streaming is even farther behind including iTunes Radio.

Everybody has their own opinion on Beats quality but quality would have nothing to do with reasons to or to not purchase a company. Microsoft is becoming a enterprise company, Beats would not even begin to fit in there. What would MS market Beats with? Marketing is not MS's strong suit anyways.

Beats is a brand, people buy their headphones just because of the Beats logo and thats what is 'in' right now. Apple is a marketing company who makes tons and tons marketing their brand. If Apple does buy Beats it's not for the headphones, it's for the brand which would increase the revenue of Apple. Think about it...you buy a new iPhone at the Apple store and a pair of Beats headphones to go along with it for $200, they actually cost about $18 to make. As much as none of us want to admit it IF anybody was to purchase Beats it would be best fit for a company with a brand.....Apple.

Microsoft should buy.blackberry to get into.enterprise.or atleast 25 % stake in blackberry.

Nope. BlackBerry business model and pretty much everything about them right now has no similarities to Apple. That would be like throwing money down the drain. Why do they need to pay for BlackBerrys mistakes?

For what? To switch everything over to QNX? At this point in time, there should be no reason Microsoft should be interested in BlackBerry. A few years ago, maybe, but now they have nothing to offer.

Perhaps there's more behind Apple's interest in Beats then meets the eye, but the valuation feels like it's based on the brand more than any particular product or service. And it's the brand that earns its products a nice margin, which I'm sure is appealing to Apple.

But, I don't really see Beats as a compelling play for MSFT. Instead, I think they should buy Sonos or Spotify. Heck, maybe they should buy both of them. They can integrate Sonos into Xbox or maybe integrate gaming and video streaming into Sonos and continue leveraging the Sonos brand, which may have more positive equity than Xbox, especially given the lackluster Xbox One performance. And Spotify would be more of a mindshare and user grab. The key, though, would be leveraging the brand equity with these acquisitions, not just the tech.

Microsoft doesn't need Beats. Microsoft already has a working backend streaming service. It's merely the front end (i.e. the Windows Phone app) that needs to be fixed. And with recent reports that Beats only has 110,000 subscribers, brand recognition is the only reason to buy Beats. Apple only needs two things from Beats, their insane profit margins from headphone sales and to bolster Apple's backend streaming service. So why wouldn't Microsoft wants a cut of those profit margins? Presumably so they don't make the same mistake that HTC did. Combining a weaker brand (HTC) with a popular one (Beats) didn't work out last time. It's likely Microsoft doesn't want to go down that same road. Plus, with the Nokia purchase, Microsoft has their own headphone line to worry about, Nokia Purity headphones. Where would that fit into a Beats acquisition? Better to keep Beats, Microsoft and Purity separate, IMO.

Its a shame Microsoft and Amazon compete so much on the cloud back end (AWS/Azure), cause on the consumer front end, together they would be an awesome counterbalance to Apple and Google.
