My theory is that they figured GD3 is not too far away so they will just release them both at once

It takes a "lot" of time to bloat a clean OS with crapware from a carrier, this "lot" of time can range anywhere from a week to a year or even more and the carrier is allowed to say "The update is due very soon"

You can flash a generic OS on your AT&T phone and make it receive updates, but not everybody knows this and the carrier likes to take an advantage of people.

Some guy posted a thread on installing generic OS on an AT&T L920.
