Person of interest thread

At least for me, such language being used frequently just makes the forums feel like a 3rd rate strip joint rather than a classy place you'd want to spend your time. I'm just not sure that's how people who speak English natively see it.

Great analogy Andreas!
I'd much rather see, dare I say an upscaled attitude.
I realize in a lot of cases we dealing with youth who are unpracticed at public image.

I honestly believe bad, language and poor expression drives many away from Mobile Nations or any forum that may be lenient.

(Look at me sounding like the strict parental unit)
:sweaty:

lol, "strict parental unit"... that expression is going in my vocabulary book ;-)

Will continue this in group chat...

I feel that the filter is too strict, but I keep my feelings out of it and enforce the rules as they are written.

Tell me you don't want to risk a ban every now and then with some of our members. I can deal with some of the ignorance. What boils my blood is the racist, homophobic and misogynistic garbage we sometimes see.

I think VisaDeclined is trying to start trouble by attempting to drive the stake in a bit further.
This person usually shows up when the mood on WC nosedives.

VisaDeclined has been a problem in the past when he attempted to drive his trolling attempts with a duplicate account (Craig Train)
We were very lenient with him.
We had even stepped in a few times to defend this user as far as I can remember.

A lot of his posting in the past was very helpful and appreciated.

I believe is just to drive others into a worse mood.
Besides it's offsite linking.

I can't believe Daniel ran that piece. Was he bored and wanted a few chuckles? Mission accomplished.

I'm keeping an eye on him and that thread.

I'm not sure he's trolling.

I don't agree with everything in Daniel's editorial, but I'd dispute only minor details and agree with most of it. I don't agree with everything in the article VisaDeclined linked to, but I agree with most of it too. I'd find it difficult to infract people for linking to information I largely agree with. I'm also not sure it's a good idea to charge someone with trolling, for linking to an article who's source can be traced straight back to WCentral.

What we can do is try and nudge such threads into a more productive direction, and close those which are rehashing topics already being discussed. I've had a very busy weekend, but I'll try and work something out tonight.

I agree with you on all points. I don't consider that to be trolling, nor do I have issues with that link, since it directly references WindowsCentral.

I've never been the type to fire people before giving them every opportunity to improve. Closing this thread without laying down some warnings or infractions will only lead to a similar thread started tomorrow and the day after that one gets closed. Some people just don't know any other way except being punished but as a whole, we have some members with good insight. Even if we don't agree with them sometimes. VisaDeclined must be a Jekyll/Hyde kind of guy because he surprises me sometimes with his boorishness one minute and thoughtfulness the next.

I'm all ears for suggestions.

Joe920 was given a 1 week vacation for "mod abuse" then came right back as Joe1520 to criticize as another person. I then gave him the permaban. I was born AT night, not last night. Let's see what he comes back as next. Maybe JoeAndroid?

Tien-Lin Chang loves to argue for the sake of arguing. He even got under Rubino's skin on the Lumia 550 thread.

JoeBerry, maybe?

Sorry for only getting back to this now. I had discussed this with Stephen and forgot this was pending here.

Finding a canned message that we could copy/past into threads where negativity and arguing is getting out of hand probably isn't realistic. At least I haven't yet found something that is always appropriate. However, I do think I've identified a general approach we could take when confronted with such threads.

The basic idea is to give people the freedom to criticize WP/WM as much as they want, but not other members, while widening the definition of what "criticism against members" means. This includes things we traditionally wouldn't infract for, in particular insults like:

"whiner"
"******"
"if you're someone who doesn't like change..."
"if you don't like it... just leave"
"hater"

Based on my analysis, those comparatively mild insults (and others like it) were the root causes for almost all the bad blood and endless arguing we encountered around the time of Dan's "is the fan community imploding" article. Threatening to infract such insults quickly took the steam out of those threads. The reason being that insults like "whiner", "******" or "hater" imply one side has views that shouldn't be taken seriously, which always put that side into a position of having to explain their views over and over again, resulting in somewhat of a vicious cycle, that the thread couldn't break out of.

This was one of the threads where I experimented with that approach. Both of the following posts are important, as they highlight the issue from both sides of the argument. As you can see, the thread basically ended at that point, without having to close it:

http://forums.windowscentral.com/windows-10-mobile/382182-3.htm#post3239089

We still have these kinds of insults being thrown around on a regular bases, and it doesn't look like infracting them will become general policy, but it may be a good tool to have for clamping down on specific threads where arguments and negativity get out of hand.

Take a look at the image Joe920 linked to in the first post of this thread:

Would you do anything with this?

I'm inclined to do the following:

1. Transfer ownership of the first post to me
2. On page two a member quoted the OP. I'd use that quote to recreate the original first post.
3. Ignore the somewhat immature behavior of Joe920

Objections? Better ideas?

I've done this for you and you now have ownership going forward.
