Recovery tool..erase SD card?

I'm on the latest W10 TP, and want to go back to 8.1. Will using the recovery tool erase all my photos from the SD card? I have almost 30gb of photos and when I try to back them up to my PC (via copy paste) it never works. It just freezes up. Any suggestions? Thanks!

edit: my photos are now copying over to my PC. I guess it just took a while calculating all that data? I'd still like to know if the recovery tool erases the SD card though.

If you are scared. Take out the SD card and put it back in after the tool finishes erasing data.

I thought about that, but wouldn't it need to reformat after the install?
