Renaming Apps?

Will we get to do this in WP8?

Seems like a simple request, yet a search yielded no threads. Does no one else get confused when they have simple tools installed with names that make them harder to find? Metrotube, Mango Compass, myatt, Ultimate Recorder, are just some of my installed apps I would like to give new names too so I can find them a little quicker on my alphabetical screen.

I doubt they ever open WP apps to be renamed by the user. It might be possible on the Surface (Pro version) though.

You could pin the apps to your start screen to better organize them.

At this point I'm sure that MS could not legally do that. App developers would most likely have to agree to give up some silly rights concerning their apps to everyone who uses MS's sevices. And by silly I mean rights that they would not give up, especially concerning established brands.

You could hack them to rename them, in both the WP8 and W8 environments, but technically you would be breaking the law, even if it was just for your convenience.

Yes, but technically the Pro version of Win 8 will let you rename shortcuts. Granted I doubt the live tiles could be changed easily.

I remember, years ago, the company I worked for at the time was using Great Plains for their accounting stuff. None of us liked it so I changed the splash screen to say Great Pains for my PC and a couple of others who requested it. all was fine till we had a GP techie there one day and I was told to change them all back. :(

Yes, you can rename shortcuts in Windows, but he is asking to rename an app. Neither WP or the metro side of Windows have any options for shortcuts like what you guys are talking about.

I'm not up on the homebrew side of WP, but there could already be way to create a shortcut to a WP app established in that realm.

But I don't want a shortcut. With no desktop, that implies it would go on my start screen. I don't want that.

Seems like most people think not. Well that is truly a shame.

I agree it is confusing. And that's why I like the homebrew Folders app. I don't particularly like folders, but I can pit all my Favorites (that don't use Live Tiles) in one folder, all my search and mp apps in another, etc. With 180 apps, and not remembering the name for half the apps, the Alpha listing is not much help. I only get lost now when trying to find a seldom used app.

I don't see the legal side to this. On WP7 you aren't be able to rename instances of the name that exist within the app, but the title that shows up in the app list and on the Live Tile are applied during the compilation stage and can be edited if you have the XAP file. I do get annoyed by a lot of tacky names, but it's not something I would bother changing - once you open the app, you're going to see the name anyway.

The point is so that apps are easier to find an the a-z list. Great that it is possible.
