Samsung Ativ S - Windows Phone 8.1 Update - Developer Preview

There are 2 main problems with the camera:

1. for some reason the camera flash starts working after the picture was taken. The flash turns on for two seconds and then off after every picture taken. when using a different camera app (CamFish, Cam360) there is no problem with the flash.

2. When choosing burst mode, after a few times the camera stops working and gives a black screen when you enter the camera app, and you must restart your phone to get the camera working again.

Tried with 3 different Ativ S phones, same problems on each phone. Also did a hard reset, did not help.

Even after a second hard reset the same bug occurs. I did a hard reset, restored my back up, let Windows Phone install all apps and changed all remaining settings (apn, E-Mail,...) Then I did a restart and voila "Over the horizon" was back. I have no idea, what setting restores the default tune after every restart.
I know how you feel. Sick of hearing "over the horizon" every time I restart phone !:)

Hi, got that Flashing screen after the update in my Ativ, Hard reset solved the problem, at least no screen flashing until now...
Got also a problem with the flash camera, even when deactivated still working on, hard reset solved that someway...
what is annoying is the battery drain, WP 8.1 consumes a lot of power indeed...

Not much of a camera user so the battery drain is my big issue. This is truly affecting my phone usage. Especially since prior to 8.1 the ativ s battery life was substantial

I'm GDR3 version 8.0, however the firmware seems to be the GDR1 version, probably the firmware s what is causing the problem reboot every 30 seconds!
Let's get organized to find a solution! do not wait for others!

No I have Firmware 2424.13.1.3 and have also the reboot loop .....

No reboots but I am down to almost dead battery after 6 hours. Turning off now. Will try another hard reset after work.

Considering Samsung has released the Ativ SE, I suspect they will not be slow about 8.1 firmware. My concern, as always, is the carriers willingness to release the firmware. Or does firmware bypass the carriers?

That is a great point. The SE is an 8.1 device. They have drivers for it.

I'm not sure, but I think it bypasses the carriers? It seems like a direct thing. If it's through carriers, then we're screwed

I have firmware 2424.13.11.2 and mine appears to be behaving. Not sure on the battery life, but it seems ok (been off mains power for 4 hours and lost 25% - kinds feels the same as before the update. I have disabled background for all the apps except a few (in battery saver) - perhaps that helped.

I'm UK based, have set region to US with UK regional settings so dates etc are correct for me, and Cortana works, as does the store.
All my APN settings survived the upgrade, but I did have to do the upgrade 3 times before it "held" - each time it looked successful (gears, data conversion etc), but it was still the prior version and there was an update waiting to be installed - so I just kept installing it in the hope that it would work - 3rd time it did.

I have the "second use of the camera, no workee" bug - that's the biggest pain for me after the upgrade. To have to restart the phone after every use of the camera app is pants.

other things I don't like:-

no cursor placement - you used to be able to tap and hold to be able to place the cursor accurately in text - that's gone, which seems an odd thing to leave out.
** edit ** just works differently now - you just drag the single cursor by the circle below it. Works well.

post an update - you have to post individlually now - seems a backward step to me and somewhat contrary to windows' integrated approach.

lack of fb messenger in the sms app - I really liked that, and again seems at odds with the "integrated" windows phone philosophy

The new screen cap key combo is a pain on the ativ s because of it's stupidly placed power and volume keys - I already have several screen caps I don't need our want.

Cortana is fun and surprisingly accurate given that I have a southern African accent. Farenheit issue can be got around by asking for the weather in celcius.

cheers

Updated 4 days ago from official GDR3 including firmware. At first problems with battery drain and sd card, but after some app updates everything working smooth now, only camera problem persists. That's the risk of a development preview... No hard reset done to avoid the problems I had with GDR3 development update; Seems flash memory partitioning was different in GDR2, was adapted automatically in GDR3 update, but after hard reset Samsung firmware repartitioned memory back to GDR2 status, while GDR3 was still in there. Result is bricked phone, had to flash back to GDR2 to solve that. That probably explains the problems of people that still have GDR2 firmware and do a hard reset with GDR3 or 8.1.
All in all very satisfied with wp8.1, extra row of tiles looks good, notification center works OK, no WIFI or data problems, word flow keyboard is excellent. Hope the camera issue will be solved soon!

My ATIV S works flawlessly on WP8.1. No issues. I have access to the store, music services and video services. I don't live in the US either. I have an unlocked device. I've received every update without issue on my device.

So You can record a video and after that take a photo? You're lucky!

Hey sorry for the delay.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by "Samsung" apn? The apn settings are all blank after a hard reset. None of the fields had any text in them.

Thanks, that's the problem I have as well. Glad to know it's not just me ;-)

WP8.1 has Mobile+SIM which is part of the OS and the APN part is a Samsung addition.

I am able to set my ringtone to whatever I want but if I reboot for any reason, the ringtone goes back to default setting. Thought it was just me doing something wrong.

I have this issue as well. Same goes for the camera and the APN issue as well. Seems to be HTC and Nokia devices having the most problems.

I suspect that the majority of issues with the WP8.1 preview on the ATIV S are firmware related.

I just noticed that my Nokia Here Drive was upgraded to Here drive plus after the dev preview install. . . was I just lucky?

The voyage of discovery continues! 😁

Just found the "move to SD" to move apps and their data to SD card.

That is very nice to see!
