Samsung is definitely out of my list...Here's why..

What's "real world"? If we're talking about tossing it lightly onto a table or a 1-2 foot drop I would think just about any phone made today can withstand that.

If you're telling me no phone can withstand a higher drop / manufacturers haven't put that much thought to drops of that nature / the odd angle drop then I can totally believe that.

These tests to me though come off more as a demonstration of the worst case scenario. Maybe they're less frequent in nature but they just may happen and it's good for anyone to know how much damage to expect and how much they need to protect their phones.

Looking at the only few unscientific SGS2 drop tests videos compared with what I have seen of the SGS3's; all I can say is it looks like Samsung's QA/QC is going down.

Real world is a gym bag type scenario or tossing your bag or jacket on the floor with your phone it or forgetting to remove your phone out of your pocket while moving say a piano that is sitting directly on your phone. That kind of stuff and the answer is yes, the GS3 would hold up better than say the iphone 5 in those scenarios. The iphone 5 would be scratched as **** while not a blemish on the GS3.

Most of the REAL phone drops I've seen were when someone is holding their phone while talking and moving their hands, and accidentally bumps their hand into something. Or they are texting and someone bumps into them from behind.

weird. Cause to me, the video is more real world. You might still drop your phone in a gym, from your pocket, from your hand. And I think the chances of sitting on your phone are miniscule as opposed to you dropping them. The "sitting down and the phone sliding out" is real though...i fear that every-time I sit..

Apple gets a lot of praise for making solid devices but the iPhone 4 and 4S had their share of problems when dropped. Most gadgets will take some type of beating when dropped from different heights, and have certain points of impact.

Simply putting a 4 or 4S in a rubber case should shatter the case, thanks to dust or particulate matter in the case scoring the glass and causing a stress fracture. Yikes!

Real world is sitting the thing on your leg while driving and forgetting its there before getting out of the car. I know I'm not the only one.....

Huh, I guess I'm not "real world" enough. All I get are slippery fingers. *emo tear*

Anyways, I still think most phones today would be able to take that kind of abuse, with possibly the exception of the piano thing. Though again, the videos I've seen would seem to be contrary to your point.

I don't know, I'm personally going to conclude it's a YMMV/no phone really is better type of thing.

To be fair, you'll never be removin' that big phone from your skinny jeans anyway, blehblehbleh... too much work. Best to stick to TellMe and Bluetooth. :D

Probably would be stuck in those skinny jeans too needing the jaws of life. Thank goodness I don't wear skinny jeans.

Yeah, I agree. Getting out of your car while it is in your lap is the only time I have ever dropped my phone in the past 5 years. That is pretty real world.

The iphone 5 couldn't even handle one weekend(or out of the box) without getting scuff marks. Hardly what you would call good build quality or premium.

The fact is, not concentrating on specific situations like drop tests, plastic is the way to go for OVERALL durability. That is why it used in automobiles, housing fixtures, air craft etc. You name it.

Rubberizing or applying a matte finish to the plastic or making it a uni-body design does not increase the quality or durability in any way. The reason that some plastics are stronger is because of the chemical properties used in manufacturing, not unlike changing the chemical properties in gorilla glass make it stronger than other glass. I am sure Samsung is aware of the proper manufacturing procedures for durable plastics since they make just about everything that uses plastic.

So careful fanboys, if the drop can break a Samsung, what is to stop it from breaking a Nokia or an HTC? They all use plastic. Unless you honestly think that a matte coating makes them more durable.

A unibody build does stengthen the integrity of the device. You have fewer weak points. The trade-off is that you don't have an easily removable battery.

The clip points on a back cover is not really a weak point, it would in reality act more like flex points, dissipating the force of the drop to the flexible cover pushing it off. The rest of the shell is pretty much the same in terms of integrity or maybe even better if Samsung used their best chemical bonding processes for their plastic.

Any engineering majors here that want to weigh in on uni-body vs. multiple piece design?

I don't think anyone is suggesting Samsung's phones are fragile or not durable. They definitely are. They just get there using different strategies than Nokia does. For some people they are acceptable or they are willing to compromise to gain the weight savings along with good durability. For others, they simply don't care for the feel of the thin and glossy plastics Samsung favors.

That's all there is to it. Now get over it already.

I was replying to blehblehbleh who was saying that the GS3 wasn't durable judging by drop test videos.

I can see your poor reading comprehension and analytical skills are out in the open again.

This may be the worst thread I've read in my time at WPCentral. What started out as someone presenting an opinion has now turned into personal attacks, name calling, and flat-out ridiculous statements. This forum is meant for discussion, not people being d-heads to each other for having opinions and preferences.

I can't say this is the first time I've seen a fellow WP fan act an ***. While at PAX in Seattle, a WP user berated a guy using an Android in line for the Xbox meet-and-greet. He wouldn't even let him talk, spewing statements like "BEST OS EVER" and "IT'S SO SMOOTH, BETTER THAN YOUR ANDROID".

This place used to be an enjoyable place to catch up on news and meet fellow WP enthusiasts but has turned into a playground full of bullies. I hope the mods can start to control this.

Any psychology majors want to weigh in on why you're on a jihad about this?

Psychology is one of my majors actually, Marketing being the other. The purpose of my posts is to educate people that weight and quality are two very different things and that you do not have to be limited by your own perceptions. Unfortunately, you and Xenophos seem to be imprisoned by weak perception skills and cannot get over your uni body fetishes. ;)
