Selecting which email account to send email on Hotmail

Hello,

I have three email accounts linked into Microsoft Live/Hotmail. When having Hotmail as the ONLY email account on my Lumia 920, I am having difficulties SELECTING which email account to write an email from. However, when I add the three email accounts individually and link them into one inbox, I am allowed to choose which email address I would like to send an email from (when composing a new email).

Any way to have HOTMAIL allow me to decide which email address I can send a new email on the Lumia 920??

Thanks,

Linking the accounts, but having only one account set up on the the phone gives you access to only that one account. The phone does not work like Hotmail.com (or Outlook.com) where signing in to one account gives you access to all linked accounts.. You need to set up all three accounts separately under Settings > Email+Accounts. Afterward, group them all under your linked inbox. When you're in the linked inbox and you hit the + (new mail) icon, you can select which of the several accounts to send from.

I don't understand what you're asking for OP. If you only have one inbox setup up for one email account, how would the OS know which other email addresses to compose the email from?

Hello,

What I am asking for is how can I specify which email account to use to compose a new email when using HOTMAIL on the Lumia 920. When I say "use HOTMAIL", I am referring to setting an email account using my hotmail address (which is a yahoo account ...which I have two other email accounts linked to that username under "live.com").

Thanks,

Oh I got what you said, but I was bumping a question for you to think about.

In any case, the thing you have to understand with the mail app is that, like I assume most other mobile OS mail apps are, doesn't do any advanced functionality in knowing that you have those other accounts linked because either it programmatically isn't equipped to do so or SMTP mail servers don't expose those kinds of services. I think mainly, if not only, the latter. As such, the only way the mail app is going to know how to do what you're asking for is is if you make it do as BCH said and as you already know, which is to setup a separate inbox for the mail account you want to send an email from and either link the boxes together or treat it as a separate inbox.

It's essentially the same as what you're doing when you "linked" email addresses on the Hotmail web mail server. For receiving email you had to tell Hotmail the login and password to gain access into your Yahoo account along with configuring your Yahoo account to either forward email or allow download of the inbox contents through POP/IMAP protocols. This is exactly what you're doing for the mail app to download email on the OS.

For sending email through a "linked" address, you're basically just okay-ing Hotmail to put the linked email address in the Sender header instead of your Hotmail one, but the sent email still routes through Hotmail's servers or in the case of a client it connects to the appropriate email server with the login and password you provided and routes it through there.

Either way, Hotmail didn't know how to do any of these things until you set it up to do so. The same with the mail app on Windows Phone. It's not gonna know where to route email or what sender header to use unless you tell it to, which in this case is by setting up an inbox for the appropriate service. And so you can either have a separate inbox for each email service or you can link them together for easier management.

Does this make sense?

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to respond...all of you. Yeah it does make sense. I guess I will just have three individual accounts and link them in a universal inbox rather than using Hotmail alone.

Thank you,
