Serious issue with Whatsapp on WP8.1 - try this

Bring your phone close to you ear , and open whatsapp

Constant sound from speakers , here is battery drain for you , LOL.

Speaker is on / playing something faded white noise , happens when whatsapp is open ( you can hear it / very faint )

It's the same when you play games. Just mute them and you hear the same

ah yeh , games i agree you have something happening with audio in background , but whatsapp ? ,

May be they used some audio API hack to keep alive for WP8 , and since 8.1 things have changed its causing issues.

I noticed this as well on my 920. I suggest we all submit feedback from within whatapp to report this issue.
