I recently bought a Surface 3, which includes 1 year of Office 365 Personal. I already had a subscription and expected this purchase to extend it, but the office.com site is still showing the original expiration date. Do I have to do something to activate this? I did install Office 2016 on my Surface.

,Mine crashed when I tried to update, wound up having to bring it to the Microsoft store. But the free 365 office icon wasn't on the new one they gave me, and MS sent me to NewEgg (that is who I bought the first one from) and NE sends me to MS... Oh well, I get it free though work anyway...

@MBY. What you should have done is when you bought the Surface 3, you activate the included 1 year by launching the included tile. That should append to your current subscription. If you immediately loaded Office 365 with your current account and then tried to add the free 1 year, it may not work. My advice would be to reset the machine to factory defaults so it's clean. Then activate the free year which will see your current subscription and append it.

@oditius. Since you bought it at Newegg, the Microsoft Store isn't obliged to help you for free though all the ones I've been to have done so to win customer favor. If you reset the machine to factory defaults, it should restore the Office 365 offer tile. Also, don't mix your Office 365 account from work with your personal Office 365 account.

When you have a clean Surface 3, there is a tile on the start menu for Office. Once you select it, you activate Office to your Microsoft account. If there is already a subscription present, it will append.

If you had first installed Office 365 from your current subscription, that tile disappears because it's no longer needed (since you already had a subscription).

That's strange, because I looked for it and it certainly wasn't anywhere obvious. All I found was the standard Get Office app. I'll talk to MS support.

Yes, that Get Office was the tile I believe (there's only one and it disappears once you install Office so I don't remember exactly what it's called).

This does not work. There is no option to append to your existing account. It wants a new account and won't let me sign in with my existing account to append the subscription.

I know, MS store has been great. And it is required for me to have it, so the company pays for it. And my tablet is a lot easier to transport around than the company notebook. And since I NEVER, EVER say anything bad about the company, or do anything illegal, no fear in that either.
