Surface Pro 3 External Monitor not connecting

I have a Surface Pro 3, a Dell ST2420L monitor, a docking station, a HDMI cable and a Microsoft SP3 mini display port to HDMI adapter. There is no way I can get the monitor to work on the Surface or the docking station even after 2 hours with Surface support.

So your have the adapter into the Dock, then the HDMI cable into the adapter?

If the adapter is not an "active" adapter, then it will not work.

I went to Best Buy and it worked fine on a HP monitor. Bought two new monitors. Working fine now.

How do you have the two monitors hooked up? Good to know the active adapters are necessarily needed.
