Time and time again I read forum posts here slamming their horrible experience with WinMo and why they can't wait to switch back and how they feel let down by Microsoft / Nokia despite those companies making no explicit promises for you to be let down by.
So I thought if they can make countless threads slamming WinMo, I can make one talking about the opposite because just like the rest those guys my existence is only validated by how many people read this, oh and I think I have a different POV.
So straight off the bat, I'm a tech enthusiast, I treat technology like it's a combination of the two games Pokemon and Online Poker. How much can I buy before all the credit companies in New Zealand shut me down due to lack of funds. It's what makes me, me and that is a large reason for switching over.
Now for me, I knew my time with Android was up. I had been with it since 2009 and i was no longer interested in what the newest version was doing, much like a parent who doesn't care what their kid does in college, just cares about the fact it's leaving home. It was a toss up between Ubuntu OS, Blackberry and WinMo. I was very nearly about to go the Ubuntu way as they were originally going to launch in England this December while I was visiting family but instead they have pushed the launch back meaning It would be difficult for me to get one. In regards to BB, I had owned one before and wasn't interested in the emphasis on BB chat and that stuff, so WinMo caught my eye. More importantly I liked what I had been hearing about the Nokia 930 (my now current device.)
So with my mind made up I did what it seems none of the complainers did and I did a bit of research. I checked to see that my essential apps where present on WinMo. It makes me laugh that, these whiners have the ability to post on a forum but not google / bing around to make sure WinMo has exactly what they want. So once I had checked that WinMo had what I wanted I called the bank, got my credit extended more, called an escort service, applied for a secondary income and then went and bought the phone.
Now here's why I like WinMo. One, I get to be an early adopter again, It was awesome owning a first gen Android, watching the platform grow, supporting devs so I want to do it again. Two, a different navigational feel, on android their was only so many ways you could theme your home page before it became either a labour of love or something you didn't do. Believe it or not, NOT having so much customization actually makes for a better user experience IMO. Three, the app challenge, now this is a lot more close to home than the others. I want to learn to make apps, Now if given a choice between three app markets, two of which gross over a million apps, and one is at the 300,00 mark, where would you want to try your first rodeo? See WinMo and it's infrastructure, I feel, is a great place for me to try my hand in the app game. Four, new ecosystem, it feels good to experience the 'big picture' in a different taste, after four years using all the google products it feels good to change my habits for Skydrive, Onenote, etc, now my phone talks to my Xbox and thats cool.
Yes I think I'm a special snow flake but this forum really needs less whinging about a platform that is only going to grow by actually having people on it. So let me know what draws you to the platform and let's just be all around excited about what we've got here because their is no time limit on the smartphone race. MS has the finances to sustain WinMo for a while and in 5 years time we may be big enough for the 'app gap' to not be such a easy target, hey if you hate it so much, go make one yourself!, nah just kidding app dev is hard.
peace!
