Upgraded to 830, feel disappointed....

I just don't understand Microsoft. I just switched from Android and it really wasn't easy.

The 830 is the best that we can get "officially" in Canada. I tried it at the Microsoft store in Toronto. Now, I didn't really notice the issues that the OP had. I found it to be pretty responsive and I thought that the screen looked really good. It lagged a bit when I loaded a game. But, I took a pass on it because I knew that I wouldn't be happy with it for long. I like big screen phones and it was just too small and far too expensive.

This phone is a rip off as far as I am concerned. They want $549 for it regular price in Canada. It is on sale for $499 at the MS store right now and that is too much. It isn't worth more than $299. I haven't checked out the US prices.

I went online. I nearly bought a 930 Special Edition for $525. I found a 1520 for $549 so I got that. It's a bit too big but at least it has LTE and expandable storage. I love it. It's a far better OS than either iOS or Android ever thought of being.

MS has a great product here but no wonder they aren't selling phones if the 830 is the best that they have to give us. There seems to be a demand for high-end flagships and it's beyond me why they aren't people what they want.

i have a 830 and find it too big.. id like an about 4inch screen with good specs..

Good specs and 4 inch screens are rare in any phone eco system except the iPhone 5/s, they're good phones if you like IOS.

Agreed. If they had taken the processor, RAM, and camera from the 1520/930, and put it in the 830, left Glance and wireless charging intact, then made it available to more carriers, it could have been the perfect WP device. For 2014-15 anyway.

Then it wouldn't be an 800 series phone. It would be in the 900 series, a true flagship, and cost double what it does now.

Remember, 820 had the same processor/RAM and an AMOLED screen that supported glance.
So of course 800 series can have all that except maybe cam.

the distortion speaker only happens when its charging, take it off qi and the speaker works fine. That must be a hardware problem, maybe electrical current effecting the speaker? If this is the case that's very amateur...

You don't suppose the speaker is being covered by the Qi pad?

Does the sound distort when the phone is laying flat on it's back on a desk?

Not for me. Only once in a while while on the Qi charger do I hear the alarm distortion.

having a 820 for 2 years, decided to 'upgrade' to the 830, and to be honest I feel a bit disappointed.

Firstly the build quality im not so sure on, it almost seems like Nokia/Microsoft have been cutting comers. The metal band around the edge has a painted feel to it apposed to a anodized finish which IMO feels cheap.
I have been considering upgrading my L720 to a L830 but am concerned that the painted finish may not be durable long term...has anyone had issues with this?

The black version is a bit more prone to scratches showing on the metal frame, as with the black Lumia 930. You won't have to worry about that if you buy one of the silver variants.

Since having the 930 from day one I have realised that there are no heat issues compared with other phones, Glace is just a useless gimmick, there are no battery issues, and nobody uses SD cards any more. Well when I say nobody, the kind of people who buy SD cards are the same kind of people who still buy CDs. Oh yeah and on a mobile phone, 4G/LTE has no noticable difference in webpage loading than 3G. I was on 4G, now on 3G contract and I don't notice any difference.

You're smoking something serious...I don't buy CDs, haven't in 10 years. And, I have a ton of SD cards. Yeah, 128GB cards for music - FLAC and WMALossless. Not to mention my cameras take dual 128GB CF cards. Glance is great, if you know how to use it...especially if one came from Symbian.

This is the same for me. I get the distortion occasionally - maybe a couple of times a month. And only on an alarm, and only when on the Qi charger.

I didn't come from Symbian, but Glance has become a must have for me. And I think you hit on something about knowing how... Or rather knowing what Glance can do. I'm not sure how many Glance detractors understand it is far more than just a clock. Especially those who cry after a blinking LED. I've used both and, IMHO, Glance is light years beyond a blinking light. It is a powerful and highly personal tool when properly leveraged.

so powerful infact that Motorola copied it in their last Moto X and called it "Active Display". I was very surprised when i saw it personally. Even worse, it's faster to "wake up" and show the info and maybe more useful than Glance screen. I felt like Glance needs some improvement after trying it out on a friend's Moto X, and couldn't help but wonder if Microsoft is planning something for this feature.

btw, once again, Glance screen on my 830 sucks. I was delivered a replacement 830 and it still fails to respond sometimes (along with double tap to wake) and its brightness level varies randomly. Even worse, the screen now suffers from image retention when Glance is set to always on when charging or "Interval" (they disappear after a while though). Wish i knew if it's software or hardware issue at least...

I would never recommend having glance always on while charging. Its asking for trouble.

it's not, actually. All info displayed move up and down the screen, exactly to avoid image retention/burn in. This never happened on the 830 i owned before, it's a new problem on this 830 they sent me.

Someone's trying really hard to convince themselves that crappier battery life, no expandable memory, no Glance, and no LTE are better than the alternative...
