Using iMac as second display?

Has anyone tried using iMac as second display from Surface Pro 4? Bought my iMac at Feb 2014, wondering if the Mini to mini port cable would do the work? But the official apple web page states the iMac only takes Thunderbolt cable?

This can be done in TDM (Target Display Mode) where in the iMac acts as an external display to any other device. However, I believe TDM is not supported on iMac 2011 and later. Look up TDM.
